The Cat Empire are an Australian jazz/funk band, formed in Melbourne, Victoria, in 1999. For most of the band's duration, the core members were Felix Riebl (lead vocals, percussion), Harry James Angus (trumpet, vocals), Will Hull-Brown (drums), Jamshid "Jumps" Khadiwhala (turntables, percussion), Ollie McGill (keyboards, backing vocals) and Ryan Monro (bass, backing vocals). Monro retired from the band in March 2021, while Angus, Hull-Brown and Khadiwhala all left in April 2022. They are often supplemented by The Empire Horns, a brass instrument, brass duo composed of Roscoe James Irwin, Ross Irwin (trumpet) and Kieran Conrau (trombone), among others. Felix Riebl (born 1 May 1981) is a singer, songwriter, and composer based in Melbourne. He is the co-founder, band leader and principal songwriter of the internationally acclaimed band The Cat Empire, who have made multi-platinum albums, and are the 2006 winner of the World Music Aria Award for their album ''Cities (The Cat Empire album), Cities''. The single peaked at #46 in the Australian singles chart. In the song, Harry James Angus narrates his experiences as a struggling student who everyone insisted was "going to be a lawyer some day". However, rather than study or concentrate on an exam, all he could think about was playing music, playing basketball, or asking a childhood crush out on a date. In the latter part of the song, he meets one of his highschool acquaintances, who has indeed become a lawyer, and is now going out with the same girl. It was the thirteenth such countdown of the most popular songs of the year, according to listeners of the Australian radio station Triple J. The broadcast began at 10am AEDT and finished a little before 7pm when the top song was announced. Broadcast live from the Sydney Big Day Out from 12pm AEDT, it regularly crossed to winning artists and listeners around Australia. Voters were limited to 20 votes each – 10 via SMS (charged at 30c per message) and 10 via the Internet (at no charge). Wolfmother had the most entries in the countdown with six, at that point the most by an artist in a single countdown.
