Slowdime Records
Slowdime Records was a record label started in 1996 by Juan Luis Carrera and Amanda MacKaye. The label was originally started, according to a label bio, “with the intent to document the new inclinations and innovations that began to surface within the Washington D.C. independent music scene,” but it eventually came to release records from bands based in cities all over the world. The origin of the label's name is a reversal of the popular aphorism, "A quick nickel is better than a slow dime." Within a short time, Amanda MacKaye became less involved and John Wall, who was playing in Kerosene 454 at the time, started running the label with Juan. A number of the label’s releases were “split” releases with another D.C.-centric label, Dischord Records. Slowdime’s releases were catalogued with the initials “SD” and a number. The Sorts
The Sorts are a primarily instrumental post-rock band based in Washington, D.C., and formed in 1994 by Josh LaRue (guitar, vocals), Stuart Fletcher (bass) and Chris Farrall (drums). Victory At Sea (band)
Victory at Sea was an American indie rock band formed in 1996, from members of bands the Swirlies and Spore, in the Boston, Massachusetts region. It consisted of vocalist/guitarist Mona Elliott, and drummer Christina Files. They added bassist Mel Lederman shortly after forming. Christina Files exited the band later to be replaced by a succession of drummers Fin Moore, Carl Eklof, and Dave Norton. Violinist/guitarist Taro Hatanaka joined the band for their most recent albums ''Memories Fade'' and ''All Your Things Are Gone'' which were released by the independent record label Gern Blandsten Records in 2004 and 2006 respectively. On September 6, 2007, the band announced on their Myspace page that they had disbanded, though they stated that all of the members have new musical endeavors. HiM (American Band)
HiM is a dub-influenced post-rock group formed in 1995 by Doug Scharin, drummer for the bands Codeine, Rex and June of 44. Their first album, ''Egg'', was their most dub-based effort. Each successive album has gone more in a quasi-world music direction. After some recording for ''Crooklyn Dub Consortium'' and Wordsound, ''Interpretive Belief System'', HiM settled on a lineup of Scharin with Bundy K. Brown, Rob Mazurek and Jeff Parker, members or occasional members of Tortoise and Isotope 217. Their first album was the underground hit ''Sworn Eyes'', produced by Doug Scharin. A few personnel changes followed, and the revamped lineup including members of June of 44. Bluetip
Bluetip was an American rock band from Washington, D.C. Golden (band)
Golden is an American rock band formed in 1993 on April 7 in Oberlin, Ohio. Since Golden's members are also involved with other, more well-known bands, Golden is often considered more of a side project than a full-fledged band in its own right. Golden's sound is an amalgamation of many rock styles, but also includes rhythms and influences of many styles from around the world (likely due to guitarist Ian Eagleson working as an ethnomusicologist). The Make-Up is an American post-punk band from Washington, D.C. formed in 1995, consisting of ex-Nation of Ulysses frontman Ian Svenonius on vocals, James Canty on guitar and organ, Steve Gamboa on drums, and Michelle Mae on bass guitar. The Make-Up were joined in late 1999 by a fifth member, Alex Minoff (of the groups Golden (band), Golden and Extra Golden), who played guitar with the group until the band's dissolution in early 2000. The Most Secret Method
The Most Secret Method was an American post-hardcore band formed in Washington, D.C., in 1995. Combining styles from groups of the first wave of punk with newer indie rock influences, the band was a major part of the vanguard which represented the D.C. music scene's new direction in the aftermath of the Revolution Summer movement. Hoover (band)
Hoover was an American post-hardcore band from Washington, D.C. Formed in 1992, Hoover went on to produce some of the more intense music to appear on the Dischord Records label in the 1990s. Compared to Fugazi, Hoover was more experimental and permissive, incorporating elements of jazz and Dub music, dub, and not limiting themselves to an aggressive stance. Unusually, three of the four members shared vocal duties equally. Vulture.com listed their song "Electrolux" as one of the greatest emo songs of the early 1990s.
