Warsaw Speedway has consisted of several former motorcycle speedway teams and stadia, including the current major venue for the sport at the Stadion Narodowy. History 1923 to 1939 The origins of speedway in Warsaw began with the founding of two clubs in the city; the first in 1923, when the Polish Motorcycle Club (Polski Klub Motorowy, PKM) were formed. One of its founders was Witold Rychter and the club's members took part in motorcycle and car competitions throughout the interwar period. The second club created in Warsaw was in late 1929, when the Legia Warsaw (sports club) created a motorcycle section, officially celebrating its anniversary on 8 December. Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of soil, dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . Roman Jankowski
Roman Jankowski (born 5 October 1957 in Kościan, Poland) is a former motorcycle speedway rider. He earned 47 international caps for the Poland speedway team and was twice champion of Poland. Career Jancarz rode from 1976 until 2006. He won the Polish Championship, title twice, in 1981 and again in 1988. Roman has also represented Poland at the World Team Cup. He rode for the Hackney Hawks in 1980 and 1981. Currently he is the youth coach and manager of Unia Leszno. Personal life Roman's three sons, Łukasz, Marcin and Norbert are all speedway riders. Craig Vincent Boyce (born 2 August 1967 in Sydney, Australia) is a former motorcycle speedway rider who primarily rode for the Poole Pirates in the British Elite League (speedway), Elite League. After retiring from riding, Boyce became manager of the Australia speedway team, Australian national team until 2012. Boyce is a three-time Australian Individual Speedway Championship, Australian Solo Champion. Andy Smith (speedway Rider)
Andrew Smith (born 25 May 1966) is a retired motorcycle speedway rider from England. He earned 29 international caps for the England national speedway team. Career Smith spent the first seven years of his career riding for the Belle Vue Aces from 1982 to 1988. He then joined Bradford Dukes for two British League seasons and began to build a reputation as one of Britain's leading riders. Smith also rode in Australia, including the 1990/91 Australian season when he based himself at Claremont Speedway in Perth, Western Australia. Despite Claremont being almost twice the length of most British tracks, on 18 January 1991 Smith defeated home town hero, and twice Australian Champion Glenn Doyle in the King of Claremont Classic. Smith also finished 2nd to Sweden's Dennis Löfqvist at the 1990 Boxing Day International at the Melbourne Showgrounds. Sam Ermolenko
Guy Allen Ermolenko (born November 23, 1960 Maywood, California) is a former motorcycle speedway rider. During his career he was known as Sam Ermolenko. In 1993, he won the Speedway World Championship. Career Early career After originally showing an interest in motocross, Ermolenko began riding in the Californian speedway circuit. As he wore red leathers, former World Champion Barry Briggs suggested the nickname of "The mad Russian" (Due to Sam's family roots) although it is believed this is not something Sam himself was keen on. 1983 to 1992 After some liberal success in California, Ermolenko moved over to the United Kingdom to race for the Poole Pirates for the 1983 British League season. The Gwardia Warsaw Stadium () was a 9,000-capacity multi-use stadium in Warsaw, Poland. It was primarily used for association football and later motorcycle speedway. History The site was originally part of the Mokotów Airport from 1910 to 1947 before being developed for sport. From the 1950s, it contained a football and speedway stadium, training pitches, tennis courts and swimming facilities. In 1955, it was handed over to the Gwardia Warsaw sports club, although the land remained in the ownership of the State Treasury.
