It lies in the northern part of the country, in the Skopje Basin, Skopje Valley along the Vardar River, and is the political, economic, and cultural center of the country. Skopje covers 571.46 km² and includes both urban and rural areas, bordered by several Municipalities of North Macedonia, municipalities and close to the borders of Kosovo and Serbia. The mayor of Skopje (; ) is the city mayor who is representing North Macedonia's capital city Greater Skopje and all of its municipalities. Skopje Fortress
The Skopje Fortress (; ; ), commonly referred to as Kale (from '' kale'', the Turkish word for 'fortress'), is a historic fortress located in the old town of Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia. Skopje Basin () or Skopje Plain () is one of the largest depression (geology), basins in North Macedonia. It represents the second largest valley along the course of the Vardar river. Macedonia Square, Skopje
Macedonia Square ( Macedonian: Плоштад Македонија, ''Ploštad Makedonija''; ) is the main square of Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia. The square is the biggest in North Macedonia with a total extent of 18,500 m2. It is located in the central part of the city, and it crosses the Vardar River. The Christmas festivals are always held there and it commonly serves as the site of cultural, political and other events. Municipalities Of North Macedonia
The municipalities are the first-order administrative divisions of North Macedonia. Stone Bridge (Skopje)
The Stone Bridge ( ; ; ) is a bridge across the Vardar River in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, built by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. The bridge is considered a symbol of Skopje and is the main element of the coat of arms of the city, which in turn is incorporated in the city's flag. It is located in Centar Municipality and it connects Macedonia Square to the Old Bazaar. Danela Arsovska
Danela Arsovska () is a North Macedonia, Macedonian politician and academic and the Mayor of the City of Skopje, mayor of Skopje since 2021. In 2014, she was elected as President of the Macedonian Chambers of Commerce, which is the union of national chambers of commerce, promoting economic cooperation on national and international level based on principles of free trade and fair competition. Scupi
Scupi (; ) is an archaeological site located between Zajčev Rid (''Зајчев Рид'' 'Rabbit Hill') and the Vardar River, several kilometers from the center of modern Skopje in North Macedonia. A Roman military camp was founded here in the second century BC on the site of an older Dardanian settlement. It became later ''Colonia Flavia Aelia Scupi'' and many veteran legionnaires were settled there. A Roman town was founded in the time of Domitian (AD 81–96) and Scupi became the chief center for romanizing Dardania. It was abandoned in AD 518 during interregnum between Anastasius I Dicorus and Justin I after an earthquake destroyed the city.
