Skateboarding Australia (SbA) was the governing body for skateboarding in Australia and is funded by the Australian Federal Government via the Australian Sports Commission (ASC). History Formation Skateboarding Australia was established in 2005 by the Board members of National Sporting Organisation, Skate Australia (SA). Demise In April 2014, SbA managers made a proposal to Sport Australia to separate skateboarding from Skate Australia and establish a national sporting organisation solely for skateboarding with the majority of funding going to it. This proposal was made without the knowledge of the Skate Australia management or Board. Sport Australia declined and the leader of SbA, Leroy magarnagle, was terminated for gross misconduct. Skate Australia
Skate Australia is the recognised governing body for skate sports and skateboarding in Australia, working in partnership with Sport Australia. The body oversees the management and development of the sports from the national team at the elite level, the conduct of national and international events, through to grass roots participation. Governance Skate Australia provides a minimal level of insurance for some roller derby leagues in Australia. According to Skate Australia's 2009-2013 strategic plan, the governance of roller derby is different from other sports affiliated with the organisation. The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) is the Australian Government commission responsible for supporting and investing in sport in Australia. The Commission incorporates the Australian Institute of Sport. From 2018 to 2022, it was known as Sport Australia. Although it is commonly believed that the Australian Government's initial involvement in sports was prompted by the country's poor performance at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games in which Australia failed to win a gold medal, the Government actually began initial investigations into its potential role in sports in 1973.
