Sjefke Janssen
Sjefke Janssen (28 October 1919 – 3 December 2014) was a Dutch professional road bicycle racer. He is most known for his bronze medal in the Elite race of the 1947 UCI Road World Championships. Janssen was a professional cyclist from 1946 through 1954. After retiring, he became a cycling team-manager and owned a bicycle shop in Elsloo. Personal life Janssen was born and died in Elsloo, Limburg, Elsloo. Jan Nolten (20 January 1930 – 13 July 2014) was a Dutch professional road bicycle racer. Nolten participated in five Tour de France, Tours de France, and won two stages. 1948 Tour De France
The 1948 Tour de France was the 35th edition of the Tour de France, taking place from 30 June to 25 July 1948. It consisted of 21 stages over . The race was won by Italian cyclist Gino Bartali, who had also won the Tour de France in 1938. Bartali had almost given up during the race, but drew inspiration from a phone call from the Italian prime minister, who asked him to win the Tour de France to prevent civil unrest in Italy after assassination attempt against Togliatti. Bartali also won the mountains classification, while the team classification was won by the Belgian team. Innovations and changes The prize for wearing the yellow jersey was introduced in 1948, sponsored by Les Laines, a French wool company. Züri-Metzgete (Zürich German; ; ) was a European Classic cycle races, Classic cycle race held annually in Zürich, Switzerland, and continued as a non-professional mass participation event from 2007 until 2014. It was a race with a long history dating back to 1914, on a demanding course in the hilly region around Zürich. In its heyday the race was considered the ''sixth monument'' of cycling, alongside the five most prestigious one-day races on the calendar (Milan–San Remo, Tour of Flanders (men's race), Tour of Flanders, Paris–Roubaix, Liège–Bastogne–Liège and the Giro di Lombardia, Tour of Lombardy). 1947 Tour De France
The 1947 Tour de France was the 34th edition of the Tour de France, taking place from 25 June to 20 July. The total race distance was 21 stages over . It was the first Tour since 1939, having been cancelled during World War II, although some Tour de France-like races had been held during World War II. Because the previous races had been canceled, there was no real favourite for the final victory. When René Vietto, the runner-up of 1939, captured the yellow jersey after his victory on the second stage, many thought he could remain first until the last day. Vietto, a climber, was less optimistic and lost his first place to Italian Pierre Brambilla after the time trial in stage 19. With only two stages to go, many now believed that Brambilla would win the race. On the last stage, there was an unexpected attack, and little-known French cyclist Jean Robic captured the lead. Elsloo, Limburg
Elsloo is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. Beek-Elsloo railway station serves Elsloo. History The village was first mentioned in 855 (CL I, 23; RI I, 1277), than 1002 as Elisla, and means "forest with alder trees". Elsloo developed in the Early Middle Ages in the valley of the Maas. The Maas flooded the village several times, and in 1459 the church was moved to higher grounds. Elsloo Castle was built in the 12th century and was flooded in the early-17th century. The brewery was converted into a castle and extended. It suffered from fires in 1835 and 1885. A Gothic Revival style corner tower was added in 1838. The Catholic St Augustinus Church is a three aisled church built between 1848 and 1849 as a replacement of the 1459 church.
