Siwanoy Country Club
Siwanoy Country Club is a country club located in Eastchester, New York. The club hosted the first PGA Championship in 1916, which was won by Jim Barnes. History Siwanoy Country Club of Mount Vernon was incorporated on May 20, 1901 at the Westchester County Clerk's office. The officers were president, Archibald M. Campbell; vice-president, Frank Mack vice-president; secretary, William N. G. Clarke; Arthur D. Stone, treasurer; and Alfred E. Taylor, team captain. The club got its name from the tribe that inhabited the shore of Long Island Sound. The club leased the Robert O. Glover estate with 40 acres of land and a house and barn. A 18 hole golf course and tennis courts were developed. Tom Kerrigan joined the Siwanoy Country Club in 1914 and served as professional at the Club for a half century. PGA Championship
The PGA Championship (often referred to as the US PGA Championship or USPGA outside the United States) is an annual golf tournament conducted by the Professional Golfers' Association of America. The PGA is one of the four men's major golf championships (the others being The Open, the Masters, and the U.S. Open) and is the only one of the four that is exclusively for professional players. 1916 PGA Championship
The 1916 PGA Championship was the first PGA Championship, which is now considered one of golf's major championships. It was held October 10–14 at Siwanoy Country Club in Eastchester, New York, just north of New York City in Jim Barnes defeated Jock Hutchison by 1 hole in the 36-hole final, holing a 4-foot putt at the final hole. Format The format of the event closely followed that of the News of the World Match Play tournament which had been organized by the British PGA since 1903, although it had not been played since 1913 because of World War I. The main difference was that the tournament was played over 5 days with all matches contested over 36 holes, whereas matches in the News of the World Match Play were over 18 holes except for the final, the event being completed in 3 days. Eastchester, New York
Eastchester is a town in southern Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was over 34,641 at the 2020 United States census over 32,363 at the 2010 census. There are two villages within the town: Bronxville and Tuckahoe. The town contains a census-designated place also named Eastchester, which is the whole town of Eastchester excluding Bronxville and Tuckahoe. History The town that is now called Eastchester began settlement in 1664 when ten families migrated from Fairfield, Connecticut. Thomas Pell, who at that time also owned the territory that is now New Rochelle and Pelham, granted a deed to the group to "settle down at Hutchinsons'," where the home of Anne Hutchinson had stood some twenty years before. Donald James Ross (November 23, 1872 – April 26, 1948) was a professional golfer and golf course designer. Ross was born and raised in Scotland but moved to the United States as a young man. Jim Barnes
James Martin Barnes (April 8, 1886 – May 24, 1966) was an English professional golfer and a leading figure in the early years of professional golf in the United States. He is one of three native Britons (with Tommy Armour and Rory McIlroy) to win three different modern major professional championships. Early life Barnes was born on April 8, 1886, in Lelant, Cornwall. Barnes was like many golfers of his era, and worked as a caddie and a club-maker's apprentice while growing up. Tom Kerrigan (golfer)
Thomas Francis Kerrigan (October 10, 1895 – May 6, 1964) was an American professional golfer who played in the early 20th century. Kerrigan's best performance in the Open Championship came in the 1921 Open Championship when after enduring an Atlantic voyage aboard the RMS ''Aquitania'' he quickly acclimated himself to the Open Championship course at St Andrews on arrival in Britain and finished in third place.
