Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Medical College
Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Medical College (SSRMC), created in 1999, is the first medical college of Mauritius, established by the Indian Ocean Medical Institute Trust (IOMIT) in Mauritius in the memory of the 'father of the nation', late Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. Rudra Pratap Narain Singh, an educationist and a social planner from India, is the founder chairman and managing trustee of the trust. The college is in Belle Rive, near the city of Curepipe which is 15 km from the capital city of Port Louis. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (in traditional Hindi: Shivsagar Ram Gulam) (18 September 1900 – 15 December 1985; often referred to as ''Chacha Ramgoolam'' or ''SSR'') was a Mauritian physician, politician, and statesman. He served as the island's only chief minister, first prime minister, and fifth governor-general. He is widely recognized as the nation's founding father (French: ''père de la nation''), although the anti-independence political group at the time of British Mauritius used to call him as a pun in French ''la perte de la nation'' (English: the misleader of the nation). Curepipe () also known as ''La Ville-Lumière'' (The City of Light), is a town in Mauritius, located in the Plaines Wilhems District, the eastern part also lies in the Moka District. The town is administered by the Municipal Council of Curepipe. Curepipe lies at a higher elevation, often referred to as the "Central Plateau". According to the census made by Statistics Mauritius in 2018, the population of the town was at 78,618. Etymology The town's name, Curepipe, is said to be originated from the French ''curer sa pipe'', which translates to "cleaning his/her pipe". There are several theories by historians as to the naming of the city.
