Iris Xiomara Castro Sarmiento (; born 30 September 1959), also known as Xiomara Castro de Zelaya, is a Honduran politician and businesswoman who has served as the 39th president of Honduras since 2022. She is the country's first List of elected and appointed female heads of state and government, female president, and served as first lady during the presidency of her husband Manuel Zelaya. 2009 Honduran Political Crisis
The 2009 Honduran constitutional crisis was a political dispute over plans to hold a popular referendum to either rewrite the Constitution of Honduras or write a new one. Honduran President Manuel Zelaya planned to hold a poll on a referendum on a constituent assembly to change the constitution. A majority of the government, including the Supreme Court and prominent members of Zelaya's own party, saw these plans as unconstitutional as they could lead to presidential reelection, which is permanently outlawed by the Honduran constitution.
