Singularity or singular point may refer to: Science, technology, and mathematics Mathematics * Mathematical singularity, a point at which a given mathematical object is not defined or not "well-behaved", for example infinite or not differentiable Geometry * Singular point of a curve, where the curve is not given by a smooth embedding of a parameter * Singular point of an algebraic variety, a point where an algebraic variety is not locally flat * Rational singularity Natural sciences * Singularity (system theory), in dynamical and social systems, a context in which a small change can cause a large effect * Gravitational singularity, in general relativity, a point in which gravity is so intense that spacetime itself becomes ill-defined ** Initial singularity, a hypothesized singularity of infinite density before quantum fluctuations caused the Big Bang and subsequent inflation that created the Universe * Penrose–Hawking singularity theorems, in general relativity theory, theor ...

Mathematical Singularity
In mathematics, a singularity is a point at which a given mathematical object is not defined, or a point where the mathematical object ceases to be well-behaved in some particular way, such as by lacking differentiability or analyticity. For example, the reciprocal function f(x) = 1/x has a singularity at x = 0, where the value of the function is not defined, as involving a division by zero. The absolute value function g(x) = , x, also has a singularity at x = 0, since it is not differentiable there. The algebraic curve In mathematics, an affine algebraic plane curve is the zero set of a polynomial in two variables. A projective algebraic plane curve is the zero set in a projective plane of a homogeneous polynomial in three variables. An affine algebraic plane cu ... defined by \left\ in the (x, y) coordinate system has a singularity (called a cusp (singularity), cusp) at (0, 0). For singularities in algebraic geometry, see singular point of an algebraic variety. For singul ...

The Singularity (Agents Of S
The technological singularity—or simply the singularity—is a hypothetical point in time at which technological growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible, resulting in unforeseeable consequences for human civilization. According to the most popular version of the singularity hypothesis, I. J. Good's intelligence explosion model of 1965, an upgradable intelligent agent could eventually enter a positive feedback loop of successive self-improvement cycles; more intelligent generations would appear more and more rapidly, causing a rapid increase ("explosion") in intelligence that culminates in a powerful superintelligence, far surpassing all human intelligence.Vinge, Vernor"The Coming Technological Singularity: How to Survive in the Post-Human Era", in ''Vision-21: Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering in the Era of Cyberspace'', G. A. Landis, ed., NASA Publication CP-10129, pp. 11–22, 1993. - "There may be developed computers that are "awake" and superhumanly intellig ...

The Singularity Is Nearer
''The Singularity Is Nearer: When We Merge with AI'' is a nonfiction book by futurist Ray Kurzweil. It is the sequel to his 2005 bestseller, ''The Singularity Is Near''. The book was released on June 25, 2024. Kurzweil reiterates two key dates from the earlier book, which predicted that artificial intelligence (AI) would Artificial general intelligence, reach human intelligence by 2029 and that people would merge with machines by 2045, an event he calls "Technological singularity, The Singularity". Content In an interview with societyforscience and sciencenews, Kurzweil said the book would contain a chapter "that shows [...] how dramatically every aspect of human life has improved over the decades and over the centuries". He added, "Some people find this frightening. But [the Singularity] is going to be beautiful and will expand our consciousness in ways we can barely imagine, like a person who is deaf hearing the most exquisite symphony for the first time." Development The bo ...

The Singularity Is Near
''The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology'' is a 2005 non-fiction book about artificial intelligence and the future of humanity by inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil. A sequel book, '' The Singularity Is Nearer'', was released on June 25, 2024. The book builds on the ideas introduced in Kurzweil's previous books, '' The Age of Intelligent Machines'' (1990) and '' The Age of Spiritual Machines'' (1999). In the book, Kurzweil embraces the term " the singularity", which was popularized by Vernor Vinge in his 1993 essay "The Coming Technological Singularity." Kurzweil describes his '' Law of Accelerating Returns'', which predicts an exponential increase in technologies like computers, genetics, nanotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence. Once the singularity has been reached, Kurzweil says that machine intelligence will be infinitely more powerful than all human intelligence combined. The singularity is also the point at which machines' intelligence and huma ...

Singularity 7
''Singularity 7'' is a four-issue comic book mini-series created, written, and illustrated by Ben Templesmith. It was published by American company IDW Publishing in 2004. The series combines elements of science-fiction, cyberpunk, and horror, to tell the story of a post-apocalyptic dystopian future. The title is a reference to the multiple definitions of ‘singularity’. Burton C. Bell's introduction to the collected volume references the myriad ways in which the word can (and is) used in the comic, as well as giving a humorous nod to the 'singularity' of the writer. "…the definition f singularityexpands beyond average intelligence. When I first heard the term, Stephen Hawking defined it when he was describing what might await at the bottom of black holes. All matter that is swallowed by the mighty gravitational pull of a black hole is reduced to a singularity, the size of an atom. That is mind blowing. The term is also used to describe that which is solely unique. Th ...
