''Sing-Songs'' is the second EP by the Australian psychedelic rock band The Church, released in December 1982. Unlike its polished predecessors, the material was quickly written and recorded as a demo for the band's U.S. label Capitol Records, who had rejected their previous album, '' The Blurred Crusade'', as too uncommercial. Capitol remained unimpressed and dropped the band, but the recordings were released in Australia by EMI/Parlophone. ''Sing-songs'' was long considered the most difficult item in The Church's catalogue to obtain as it was only released as a fairly limited vinyl pressing. In 2001, EMI Australia released the compilation album ''Sing-Songs//Remote Luxury//Persia'', which contained remastered versions of all the tracks from the EP in their original running order. ''The Blurred Crusade'' is the second album by the Australian alternative rock band the Church, released in March 1982 by EMI Parlophone. Note: Archived n-linecopy has limited functionality. Moving away from the new wave leanings of their debut, it was stylistically more complex and "a smoother, fuller release". The Church (band)
The Church are an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1980. Initially associated with new wave, neo-psychedelia, and indie rock, their music later came to feature slower tempos and surreal soundscapes reminiscent of alternative rock, dream pop, and post-rock. Glenn A. Baker has written that "From the release of the 'She Never Said' single in November 1980, this unique Sydney-originated entity has purveyed a distinctive, ethereal, psychedelic-tinged sound which has alternatively found favour and disfavour in Australia." The ''Los Angeles Times'' has described the band's music as "dense, shimmering, exquisite guitar pop". The founding members were Steve Kilbey on lead vocals and bass guitar, Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper on guitars, and Nick Ward on drums. "I Am a Rock" is a song written by Paul Simon. It was first performed by Simon as the opening track on his album ''The Paul Simon Songbook'' which he originally recorded and released in August 1965, only in the United Kingdom. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, as the American folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel, re-recorded it on December 14, 1965, and included as the final track on their album ''Sounds of Silence'', which they released on January 17, 1966. It was released as a single in 1966, and subsequently included as the B-side of the 1971 A-side reissue of "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)". ''Seance'' is the third album by the Australian psychedelic rock band The Church (band), The Church, released in 1983. More atmospheric and brooding than its predecessor ''The Blurred Crusade''s jangling Psychedelic music, psychedelia and upbeat rock, it shows a greater use of keyboards, with the guitars taking largely textural roles on many songs. While numerous tracks have become fan favorites over the years, the album saw considerably less success in Australia than previous releases and had limited exposure internationally. Apart from the psychedelic noise experiment "Travel By Thought", which prefigures the band's extended improvised tracks of the 1990s and beyond, all songs were written solely by Steve Kilbey. Dream Pop
Dream pop (also typeset as dreampop) is a subgenre of alternative rock and neo-psychedelia that emphasizes atmosphere and sonic texture as much as pop melody. Common characteristics include breathy vocals, dense productions, and effects such as reverb, echo, tremolo, and chorus. It often overlaps with the related genre of shoegaze, and the two genre terms have at times been used interchangeably. Bob Clearmountain (born Chiaramonte, January 15, 1953) is an American mixing engineer and record producer, best known for his work with major acts, including Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Roxy Music, Pretenders, and Bryan Adams. Described by '' Sound on Sound'' magazine as having "his name on more hit records than anyone else in the history of popular music", he is credited with establishing the role of mixing engineer. Neo-psychedelia is a genre of psychedelic music that draws inspiration from the music production approaches and songwriting of 1960s psychedelia, either exploring emulations of the sounds of the era or applying its ethos to new styles of music. Studios 301 is an Australian recording studio and is both the longest-running professional recording studio in the southern hemisphere and the largest studio complex in Australia. Alternative rock (also known as alternative music, alt-rock or simply alternative) is a category of rock music that evolved from the independent music underground of the 1970s.
