''Singing Ax'' is the eighth studio album by American folk musician J. Tillman, released via Western Vinyl. It is the final album Tillman released under his own name. The album is an LP and MP3 release only. It was recorded in three days in February 2010 by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago, and was mastered by Bob Weston. In an interview following his transition from J. Tillman to Father John Misty Joshua Michael Tillman (born May 3, 1981), better known by his stage name Father John Misty, is an American musician. Father John Misty
Joshua Michael Tillman (born May 3, 1981), better known by his stage name Father John Misty, is an American musician. He is known for his satirical lyrics and eccentric performance style. Tillman began his career in Seattle in the early 2000s. One of his demos reached Damien Jurado, and in 2003 he opened for him on his tour. Tillman began performing and releasing studio albums under the name J. Tillman. The albums were characterised by their folk sound and intimate lyrics. In 2008 Tillman joined the band Fleet Foxes as their drummer during the tour for their first record; he went on to play on their second album, '' Helplessness Blues'' (2011). Tillman left the band soon after the record was completed and started a new solo project, now under the name Father John Misty, releasing his first record, '' Fear Fun,'' in 2012. Steve Albini
Steven Frank Albini (; July 22, 1962 – May 7, 2024) was an American musician and audio engineer. He founded and fronted the influential post-hardcore and noise rock bands Big Black (1981–1987), Rapeman (1987–1989) and Shellac (band), Shellac (1992–2024), and engineered acclaimed albums such as Pixies (band), the Pixies' ''Surfer Rosa'' (1988), PJ Harvey's ''Rid of Me'', Nirvana (band), Nirvana's ''In Utero'' (both 1993) and Manic Street Preachers' ''Journal for Plague Lovers'' (2009). Albini was born in Pasadena, California, and raised in Missoula, Montana. After discovering the Ramones as a teenager, he immersed himself in punk rock and underground culture. It was released on April 30, 2012, in the UK and Europe on Bella Union, and in the rest of the world on May 1, 2012, on Sub Pop Produced by both Tillman and Jonathan Wilson, the album was released following Tillman's departure from Fleet Foxes.
