The Singapore Sevens is an annual rugby sevens tournament contested by national teams. It was first hosted as part of the IRB World Sevens Series in 2002. The Standard Chartered Bank was the original title sponsor. It was effectively replaced in the calendar by the Australian Sevens for the 2006-07 season. The tournament returned as an official event within the Asian Sevens Series in 2013. Singapore then secured a four-year deal to host a leg of the Sevens World Series starting from the 2015–16 season. Singapore's rights to host a leg of the Sevens World Series was extended for a further four years until 2023, before the 2020 event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tournament in Singapore was cancelled again in 2021 due to ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic to protect the health and safety of players, fans, and staff. National Stadium, Singapore
The Singapore National Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Kallang, Singapore. It serves as the country's national stadium. Opened in 2014, it was constructed on the site of the former National Stadium, which stood from 1973 to 2010. The 55,000-seat facility is the centrepiece of the Singapore Sports Hub, a sports and recreation district that also incorporates nearby Singapore Indoor Stadium and other sporting venues. One of the largest domed structures in the world, it features a naturally-ventilated design with a retractable roof, and has configurations for football, rugby, athletics and cricket. The 2024 Singapore Sevens or SVNS SGP was a rugby sevens tournament played at Singapore National Stadium. Twelve men's and women's teams participated. The format of the tournament differs to the other tournaments on the series, with four groups of three teams and no quarter-finals matches. The 2022 Singapore Sevens was a rugby sevens tournament played on 9–10 April 2022 at the National Stadium in Singapore. It was the ninth edition of the Singapore Sevens and the fifth tournament of the 2021–22 World Rugby Sevens Series. This was the first event in the series for which no invited teams featured in tournament, and all core teams were available. In the cup final, it was Fiji who took out their record third Singapore title after they defeated New Zealand by 28–17. Australia narrowly defeated Ireland by 21–19 to finish in third place. The defending tournament champions from 2019, South Africa, finished in equal-seventh place, and also lost their thirty-six match win streak in the pool stage against the United States by 7–12.
