Sin (1928 Film)
''Sin'' (Swedish: ''Synd'', German: '' Rausch'') is a 1928 silent drama film directed by Gustaf Molander and starring Lars Hanson, Elissa Landi and Gina Manès.Gustafsson p.83 A German-Swedish-British co-production, it premiered in Sweden in September 1928 but was not released in London until January 1929. It was shot at the Råsunda Studios in Stockholm and on location in the city. The film's sets were designed by the art director Vilhelm Bryde, who also produced the film. It is based on an 1899 play ''Brott och brott'' (''There are crimes and crimes'') by August Strindberg which had previously been made into a 1919 film ''Intoxication'', directed by Ernst Lubitsch. Gustaf Molander
Gustaf Harald August Molander (18 November 1888 – 19 June 1973) was a Swedish actor and film director. His parents were director Harald Molander, Sr. (1858–1900) and singer and actress Lydia Molander, ''née'' Wessler, and his brother was the director Olof Molander (1892–1966). He was the father of director and producer Harald Molander from his first marriage, from 1910-1918, with actress Karin Molander and father to actor Jan Molander from his second marriage to Elsa Fahlberg (1892–1977). Gustaf Molander was born in Helsingfors (Helsinki) in the Grand Duchy of Finland (in the Russian Empire), where his father was working at the Swedish Theatre. He studied in the school of the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm 1907–1909, acted at the Swedish Theatre in Helsingfors 1909–1913, and then at the Royal Dramatic Theatre from 1913 to 1926. Råsunda Studios
Filmstaden was a film studio situated in Råsunda, Solna Municipality in Stockholm, Sweden. History Filmstaden was once one of the most modern film studios of its time in Europe. It was built in 1919–1920 based on designs by Swedish architect Ebbe Crone (1885-1960). It was owned and operated by SF Studios (''Svensk Filmindustri''), the main Swedish film producer at the time. Some 400 movies have been created at Filmstaden. The first movie to be filmed at Filmstaden was ''The Phantom Carriage'' (''Körkarlen''. 1921) by director Victor Sjöström. Practically all Swedish actors and film directors of the 20th century had some connection with Filmstaden. Hugo Björne
Hugo Björne (4 February 1886 – 14 February 1966) was a Swedish film and theater actor. Biography Ernst Hugo Alexis Björne was born in Varberg in Halland, Sweden. He made his stage debut in 1907 and belonged to the acting company of Hjalmar Selander until 1911 when he moved to the theater company of Einar Fröberg where he worked until 1914. Björne was involved at Svenska Teatern in Stockholm (1914–1925), at Vasateatern (1925–1926), at Oscarsteatern (1926–1932) and later at Vasateatern under the direction of Gösta Ekman (1932–1936). After 1946, he became committed to the Royal Dramatic Theatre. He made his film acting debut in 1913, starring in silent movies. Later, Björne would be better known as a supporting actor. He was quite productive, participating in more than 130 films where he often portrayed rather anonymous characters such as judges, professors and doctors. ''Intoxication'' (German: ''Rausch'') is a 1919 German silent drama film directed by Ernst Lubitsch and starring Asta Nielsen, Alfred Abel and Karl Meinhardt. It was based on the play '' Brott och brott'' (''There are crimes and crimes'') by August Strindberg, which was later remade as the 1928 film ''Sin''. Lubitsch was loaned out by UFA to the smaller Argus-Film for the production. Only a 13-minute fragment of the film, kept in Bundesarchive in Germany, is known to have survived. Plot Gaston finally succeeds as a dramatist and decides to leave his wife and child for another woman. When the child dies, the finger is pointed at him, and he winds up as a destitute before all is revealed.
