Simplocaria Metallica
''Simplocaria metallica'' is a species of pill beetle in the family Byrrhidae. It is found in Europe and Northern Asia (excluding China) and North America. ''S. metallica'' is an obligate herbivore, often feeding from three main moss species: ''Pohlia filum'', ''Ceratodon purpureus'', and ''Bryum arcticum''. Data suggests that this diet is shared between males and females, preferring the moss genera, ''Pohlia''. References Further reading * * External links

Pill Beetle
Byrrhidae, the pill beetles, is a family of beetles in the superfamily Byrrhoidea. They are generally found in damp habitats within cooler-high latitude regions of both hemispheres. Most byrhhids feed on moss, lichens and algae, though some species feed on vascular plants.Maier, Crystal A., Lawrence, John F. and Leschen, Richard A. B.. "Byrrhidae Latreille, 1804: Coleoptera, Beetles". ''Handbook of Zoology Online'', edited by Andreas Schmidt-Rhaesa. Berlin, Boston: De Gruyter, 2016. The oldest undoubted record of the family is '' Lidryops'' from the earliest Late Cretaceous Charentese amber of France, with other less certain records going back to the Middle Jurassic, but these possibly belong to Byrrhoidea. There around 500 extant species in 40 genera. Taxonomy There are about 450 species in this family.Lawrence, J. F., Slipinski, A., Jaeger, O., & Pütz, A. (2013)The Australian Byrrhinae (Coleoptera: Byrrhidae) with descriptions of new genera and species.''Zootaxa'' 3745(3), ...

Pohlia Filum
''Pohlia'' is a genus of mosses in the family Mniaceae, found on all continents including Antarctica. Some of its species are native to multiple continents. The center of diversity is the Northern Hemisphere. The genus name of ''Pohlia'' is in honour of Johann Ehrenfried Pohl (1746–1800), who was a German physician and botanist. The genus was circumscribed by Johann Hedwig in Descriptio et Adumbratio microscopio-analytica Muscorum Frondosorum vol.1 on page 98 in 1785-1787. Species Currently accepted species include: *'' Pohlia afrocruda'' Brotherus *'' Pohlia alba'' Lindberg & H.Arnell *'' Pohlia aloysii-sabaudiae'' Negri *'' Pohlia alteoperculata'' (Dixon) *''Pohlia ampullacea'' Hampex Gangulee *'' Pohlia andalusica'' Brotherus *''Pohlia andrewsii'' A.J.Shaw *''Pohlia annotina'' Lindberg *'' Pohlia apolensis'' R.S.Williams *'' Pohlia aristatula'' H.A.Miller, H.O.Whittier & B.Whittier *''Pohlia atropurpurea'' (Wahlenb.) Ceratodon Purpureus
''Ceratodon purpureus'' is a dioicous moss with a color ranging from yellow-green to red. The height amounts to 3 centimeters. It is found worldwide, mainly in urban areas and next to roads on dry sand soils. It can grow in a very wide variety of habitats, from polluted highway shoulders and mine tailings to areas recently denuded by wildfire to the bright slopes of Antarctica. Its common names include redshank, purple forkmoss, ceratodon moss, fire moss, and purple horn toothed moss. Description Fire moss is a native, short moss that forms dense tufts or sometimes cushions.Shaw, J.; Jules, E. S.; Beer, S. C. 1991. Effects of metals on growth, morphology, and reproduction of Ceratodon purpureus. Bryologist. 94(3): 270-277.Bland, John H. 1971. Forests of Lilliput. The realm of mosses and lichens. Bryum Arcticum
''Bryum'' is a genus of mosses in the family Bryaceae. It was considered the largest genus of mosses, in terms of the number of species (over 1000), until it was split into three separate genera in a 2005 publication. As of 2013, the classification of both ''Bryum'' and the family Bryaceae to which it belongs underwent significant changes based on DNA studies.Genus ''Bryum'', California Moss eFlora, Jepson eFlora for CA Vascular Plants, University Herbarium, University of California/ref> Description ''Bryum'' is a polyphyletic genus that has high morphological variation. Bryum species generally have shorter laminal cells with short, thick, and rounded stems. All ''Bryum'' species exhibit narrowed cells at the margins. Bryum species can be identified through patterns of asexual reproduction, coloration features of the stem and leaf base, and the strength of the leaf border. History The genus was described by Johann Hedwig in 1801, with the name being derived from the Greek wor ...
