Simon McKeon
Simon Vincent McKeon (born 19 December 1955) is an Australian lawyer, businessman, philanthropist, and sportsman. He has been the 8th chancellor of Monash University, and non-executive director of Rio Tinto, Spotless Group, and National Australia Bank. He is retained by Macquarie Bank Melbourne as a consultant and is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (FAICD). On 25 January 2011 he was named the 2011 Australian of the Year. Business After completing a Bachelor of Commerce in 1976 and Bachelor of Laws in 1978, both at the University of Melbourne, Simon McKeon practised law in Sydney with Blake Dawson Waldron before taking up a post with the Macquarie Bank, where he became the Executive Chairman (Melbourne Office). The Australian Academy of Science was founded in 1954 by a group of distinguished Australians, including Australian Fellows of the Royal Society of London. The first president was Sir Mark Oliphant. Harry Messel
Harry Messel, , (3 March 1922 – 8 July 2015) was a Canadian-born Australian physicist and educator. Life and work Messel was born in Canada to Ukrainian parents. He was born in Levine Siding in Manitoba, and brought up in Rivers, Manitoba. He was accepted into the Royal Military College of Canada. During the Second World War he served as a paratrooper with the Canadian Forces. He entered Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, in 1946, enrolling in both Honours Engineering Physics and an Honours Degree in Mathematics. After fellowships at University of St Andrews and Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, Messel moved to Australia in 1951. Juukan Gorge is a gorge in the Hamersley Range in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, about from Tom Price, Western Australia, Tom Price. It was named by the daughter of Puutu Kunti Kurrama man Juukan, also known as Tommy Ashburton, who was born at Jukarinya (Mount Brockman). The gorge is known primarily for a cave that was the only inland site in Australia with evidence of continuous human occupation for over 46,000 years, including through the Last Glacial Period, last Ice Age. The cave was permanently destroyed by mining company Rio Tinto (corporation), Rio Tinto in May 2020. Ministerial consent had been given to expand Rio Tinto's mine in 2013 under Western Australian legislation.
