Simon Keenan
Simon Keenan (born 8 October 1992) is an Australian representative rower. He is a national champion, a silver medal winner at world championships and is an Olympian. He rowed in the Australian men's eight at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Early life Keenan is the son of Australian Rules premiership winning footballer Peter Keenan. Simon Keenan was educated at Xavier College where he took up rowing. Club, varsity and state rowing Keenan senior club rowing has been from the Melbourne University Boat Club in Melbourne. In 2010 in MUBC colours he won the Fawley Challenge Cup for junior quad sculls at the Henley Royal Regatta. In 2011 racing in Upper Yarra Rowing Club colours he was in a men's eight which won the Thames Challenge Cup at Henley. He debuted at state representative level for Victoria in the 2011 youth eight which contested and won the Noel Wilkinson Trophy at the Interstate Regatta within the 2011 Australian Rowing Championships. King's Cup (rowing)
The King's Cup is Australia's blue riband annual rowing race for men. Since 1878 it has been contested by state representative senior heavyweight men's coxed eights at the annual Australian Interstate Regatta. Since 1973 the Australian Interstate Regatta has been conducted on the final day of the week-long annual Australian Rowing Championships. The King's Cup is the final event of the Australian Championships and the Interstate Regatta. Early history Victoria and New South Wales commenced inter-colonial racing in eight-oared boats in 1878 when the Victorian Rowing Association invited New South Wales oarsmen from the Sydney and the Mercantile clubs to boat crews for a race on the lower Yarra River over about four miles. 2017 World Rowing Championships
The 2017 World Rowing Championships were the 47th edition of the World Rowing Championships that were held from 24 September to 1 October 2017 in Sarasota, Florida. Host selection During 2013, Plovdiv and Sarasota, Florida both applied to host the 2017 World Rowing Championships. In April 2013, a committee of International Rowing Federation (FISA) officials visited Sarasota and then Plovdiv the following month. It was then noted that Plovdiv had hosted the 2012 World Rowing Championships and bid documentation for 2017 had not been finalized. Before the next FISA congress, the bid from Plovdiv was changed to apply for the 2018 hosting rights. At the FISA Congress held on 2 September 2013, hosting rights were assigned by unanimous decision for World Rowing Championships to Sarasota for 2017, Plovdiv for 2018, and Plovdiv for the 2015 World Rowing U23 Championships. Rowing is the act of propelling a human-powered watercraft using the sweeping motions of oars to displace water and generate reactional propulsion. Rowing is functionally similar to paddling, but rowing requires oars to be mechanically attached to the boat, and the rower drives the oar like a lever, exerting force in the ''same'' direction as the boat's travel; while paddles are completely hand-held and have no attachment to the boat, and are driven like a cantilever, exerting force ''opposite'' to the intended direction of the boat. Fergus Hamilton (born 29 January 2000) is an Australian representative rower. He was a 2017 World Junior Champion and in 2023 made the Australian senior squad. Club and varsity rowing Hamilton attended Melbourne Grammar School where he took up rowing. He was Captain of Boats in his senior year. His senior club rowing has been from Melbourne's Mercantile Rowing Club. His father Richard Hamilton was an Olympian rower for Great Britain at Atlanta 1996. Fergus Hamilton won a place a Yale University to study environmental science. He rowed in the men's heavyweight crews in his freshman and second years. In the 2019/20 season he rowed in the six seat of the Yale senior eight which won the collegiate title at the Head of the Charles. The World Rowing Cup is an international rowing competition organized by FISA (the International Rowing Federation). It began in 1997 and comprises three regattas (apart from in 2001 when there were four) held throughout early summer. In each event points are awarded to the top seven finishing boats and an overall winner determined after the last world cup regatta each year.
