Simegnew Bekele
Simegnew Bekele Aynalem ( am, ስመኘው በቀለ አይናለም; 13 September 1964 – 26 July 2018) was an Ethiopian civil engineer who served as chief project manager of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam project as well as three other similar dam projects in Ethiopia. He was considered the "public face" of the dam project. Biography Simegnew was born in 1964 in the small town of Maksegnit located in Begmeder Province. He completed a course at the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) technical training center in 1986. He taught at the institution for a while after graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering from Addis Ababa University in 1997. He served as deputy project manager for the Gilgel Gibe I and the project manager for the Gilgel Gibe II dams. In 2011 he was designated as head of the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam Project Office (GERDPO), since the start of its construction in 2011. Begemder
Begemder ( amh, በጌምድር; also known as Gondar or Gonder, alternative name borrowed from its 20th century capital Gondar) was a province in northwest Ethiopia. Etymology A plausible source for the name ''Bega'' is that the word means "dry" in the local language, while another possible interpretation could be "sheep," where rearing of sheep is ''beg'' in Amharic. Thus, ''Begemder'' likely refers to "land that rears sheep" or "the dry area." Another etymology is that the first two syllables come from the Ge'ez language ''baggi`'' for sheep ( Amharic: ''beg medir'') "Land of Sheep." Beckingham and Huntingford note that Begemder originally applied to the country east of Lake Tana, where water is scarce, and concluded, "The allusion to the lack of water suggests Amharic ''baga'', "dry season," as a possible source of the name." Gilgel Gibe I Dam
The Gilgel Gibe I Dam is a rock-filled embankment dam on the Gilgel Gibe River in Ethiopia. It is located about northeast of Jimma in Oromia Region. The primary purpose of the dam is hydroelectric power production. The Gilgel Gibe I hydroelectric powerplant has an installed capacity of 184 MW, enough to power over 123,200 households. The dam is long and tall. Construction on the dam began in 1988 but work was halted in 1994. In 1995 construction restarted with a new construction firm. The power station was commissioned in 2004. Water from the dam is diverted through a long tunnel to an underground power station downstream. Girma Yeshitila (Amharic: ግርማ የሺጥላ; 1973 – 27 April 2023) was an Ethiopian politician and the head of the Prosperity Party in the Amhara region who was assassinated in 2023. Death The government reported that he was traveling for work when he and his bodyguards were shot on 27 April 2023, in Menz, North Shewa, Ethiopia. Abiy Ahmed blamed "extremist" but the Amhara accused the Abiy's regime of the plot and assassination. At least 14 other people including Girma’s wife and police officers were injured. The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF; ti, ህዝባዊ ወያነ ሓርነት ትግራይ, lit=Popular Struggle for the Freedom of Tigray), also called the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front, is a left-wing ethnic nationalist paramilitary group, a banned political party, and the former ruling party of Ethiopia.
