Silver Cloud (song)
''Silver Cloud'' is the debut single by German band La Düsseldorf, released in advance of their eponymous debut album. The single peaked at number 2 on the German music charts and made La Düsseldorf famous. Unusually for a high-charting single, "Silver Cloud" is entirely instrumental (although the B-side "La Düsseldorf" is not). The single continues to be popular, and was re-released on CD in 2008. Background & Success Following the release of ''Neu! '75'' in 1975, Neu! disbanded, and Klaus Dinger began writing music for a La Düsseldorf album. La Düsseldorf had been founded the previous year during Neu!'s 1973-4 hiatus, and both Thomas Dinger and Hans Lampe had featured on ''Neu! '75'' playing drums. "Isi" was a 1975 single by the German band Neu!, released in the United Kingdom to promote their album '' Neu! '75''. Like its predecessor " Super"/"Neuschnee", "Isi" failed to chart and is now a collectors' item due to its rarity. It was sold in an unmarked paper sleeve by United Artists, who marketed Neu! in the UK. Background & Recording The recording of '' Neu! '75'', the last of Neu!'s original studio albums, was begun in December 1974 at Conny Plank's studio in Cologne. Like ''Neu! 2,'' the album has a definite binary nature, with the first side recorded by the original duo of Dinger and Rother, the second by the expanded four-part Neu!-La Düsseldorf supergroup. Neu! (; German for "New!"; styled in block capitals) were a West German krautrock band formed in Düsseldorf in 1971 by Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother following their departure from Kraftwerk. The group's albums were produced by Conny Plank, who has been regarded as the group's "hidden member". They released three albums in their initial incarnation—'' Neu!'' (1972), ''Neu! 2'' (1973), and ''Neu! 75'' (1975)—before disbanding in 1975. They briefly reunited in the mid-1980s. ''Neu! 75'' is the third studio album by the krautrock band Neu!. It was recorded and mixed at Conny Plank's studio between December 1974 and January 1975. It was released in 1975 by Brain Records, and officially reissued on CD on 29 May 2001 by Astralwerks in the US and by Grönland Records in the UK. Overview This album saw Neu! regroup after a few years' break, during which time Michael Rother had worked together with Cluster in the krautrock supergroup Harmonia. By this time, Rother and bandmate Klaus Dinger had somewhat diverged in their musical intentions for the band, Dinger preferring a more aggressive, rock-influenced style than Rother's ambient predilections. As a result, they agreed to a compromise: Side 1 of the record was recorded in the old Neu! style, as a duo, with Dinger playing drums. "Rheinita" is a 1979 single by German band La Düsseldorf. It was the band's most successful single. The success of the single in both its 7" and 12" versions led EMI to offer the band a 1 million DEM advance, should they break their contract with Teldec. Recording & release Following the success of their debut album, La Düsseldorf decided to dispense with producer Conny Plank and buy their own studio in Düsseldorf. ''Viva'' evolved over several years in the studio, the band now having unrestricted studio access. The album was released in 1978, and was followed the next year by the "Rheinita" single. Unusually for a hit record it is instrumental (as was ''Silver Cloud'') and over seven minutes long in the full 12" version. Conny Plank
Konrad "Conny" Plank (3 May 1940 – 5 December 1987) was a German record producer and musician. He is known for his innovative work as a sound engineer and producer in Germany's krautrock and kosmische music scene in the 1970s. Plank was involved in releases by Neu!, Kraftwerk, Cluster, Harmonia, Ash Ra Tempel, Guru Guru, Kraan, and other German groups of the era. He later produced for new wave acts such as D.A.F., Eurythmics, and Ultravox. As a billed performer, Plank also formed the group Moebius & Plank, releasing 5 studio albums between 1979 and 1986. Style and influence Plank and the bands he worked with in West Germany had a strong influence on mainstream rock artists, some of whom were able to popularize aspects of his production technique and his distinctive approach. Klaus Dinger (24 March 1946 – 21 March 2008) was a German musician and songwriter most famous for his contributions to the seminal krautrock band Neu!. He was also the guitarist and chief songwriter of New wave music, new wave group La Düsseldorf and briefly the percussionist of Kraftwerk. 1946–1971: The No, The Smash, and Kraftwerk Klaus Dinger was born in Scherfede, Province of Westphalia, Westphalia, Germany, to Heinz and Renate Dinger on 24 March, 1946. He was their first child. Before he was a year old, his parents moved from the town, which had been badly damaged by an Allies of World War II, Allied siege at the end of World War II, to Düsseldorf. In 1956 he attended Görres Gymnasium School for the first time. During his time there he was part of an a cappella choir, which he had to leave when his voice broke.
