Silva McLeod
Silva McLeod (born 1961) is a Tongan pilot and writer, who in 1992, according to the Australian Aviation Authority, became the first woman from Tonga to be awarded a pilot's license. McLeod grew up on the island of Pangaimotu in Vava’u, in a home without electricity. As a child had an intense interest in aeroplanes, watching them fly over her house as often as she could. After her marriage in 1980, she moved to Australia in 1981, later living in Melbourne, and it was her husband who purchased her first flying lessons for her. In 1992, according to the Australian Aviation Authority, became the first woman from Tonga to be awarded a pilot's license. By 1998, at the age of 37, McLeod was working full time as a captain for Royal Tongan Airlines. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is an Australian statutory authority responsible for the regulation and safety oversight of Australia's civil aviation. CASA was formed on 6 July 1995 under the ''Civil Aviation Act 1988'' when the Civil Aviation Authority was split into two separate government bodies: Airservices Australia and CASA. Vavaʻu
Vavau is an island group, consisting of one large island (ʻUtu Vavaʻu) and 40 smaller ones, in Tonga. It is part of Administrative divisions of Tonga, Vavaʻu District, which includes several other individual islands. Royal Tongan Airlines
Royal Tongan Airlines was the national airline of Tonga until liquidation in 2004. It was a government agency and operated interisland services and international routes. History Formative years In 1983 a feasibility study was undertaken by All Nippon Airways to investigate the setting up of a Tongan airline. It was planned for Friendly Island Airways to begin operations in October 1984, with technical and managerial assistance provided by the Japanese airline, and for the airline to operate a surplus ANA Boeing 737-200. Aeropelican Air Services Pty Ltd was a regional airline based in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. Its main base was Newcastle Airport, New South Wales, Newcastle Airport, with a hub at Sydney Airport.
