Sills John Gibbons
Sir Sills John Gibbons (1809–1876) was a London merchant and Lord Mayor of London in 1871. Life He was born the son of Richard Gibbons of Chatham, Kent and became a hop merchant. He was a member of the Metropolitan Board of Works for the City of London (1868–71). He was elected an Alderman for Castle Baynard ward in 1862 and appointed a Sheriff of London for 1865–66 and 543rd Lord Mayor of London The Lord Mayor of London is the Mayors in England, mayor of the City of London, England, and the Leader of the council, leader of the City of London Corporation. The Lord Mayor of London is the Mayors in England, mayor of the City of London, England, and the Leader of the council, leader of the City of London Corporation. Hops
Hops are the flowers (also called seed cones or strobiles) of the hop plant ''Humulus lupulus'', a member of the Cannabaceae family of flowering plants. Metropolitan Board Of Works
The Metropolitan Board of Works (MBW) was the upper tier of local government for London between 1856 and 1889, primarily responsible for upgrading infrastructure. It also had a parks and open spaces committee which set aside and opened up several landmark parks. The metropolis, which the board served, included substantial parts of Middlesex, Surrey, and Kent throughout the 33 years leading up to the advent of county councils. This urban zone lay around the medieval-sized City of London but plans to enact a similar body in 1837 failed. Parliament finally passed the Metropolis Management Act 1855 which dissolved a short-lived building office and a sewers commission and made the Board effective as of December that year. Gibbons Baronets
There have been two baronetcies created for persons with the surname Gibbons, one in the Baronetage of Great Britain and one in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. One creation is extant as of 2012. The Gibbons Baronetcy, of Stanwell#Stanwell Place, Stanwell Place in the County of Middlesex, was created in the Baronetage of Great Britain on 21 April 1752 for Sir William Gibbons, Speaker of the Barbados House of Assembly, House of Assembly, Barbados. Sir Sydney Waterlow, 1st Baronet
Sir Sydney Hedley Waterlow, 1st Baronet, (1 November 1822 – 3 August 1906) was a British philanthropist and Liberal Party politician, principally remembered for donating Waterlow Park to the public as "a garden for the gardenless". Life He was the son of James Waterlow and was born in Finsbury, on the edge of the City of London, and was brought up in Mile End. Educated at St Saviour's Grammar School, he was apprenticed to a stationer and printer and worked in the family firm of Waterlow and Sons, a large printing company employing over 2000 people. From that he moved into finance and became a director of the Union Bank of London. He was a Commissioner at the Great Exhibition in 1851 and a juror at the Paris International Exhibition in 1867, for which he was knighted.
