Silence Becomes It
''Silence Becomes It'' is the debut album by Portuguese band Silence 4, released in June 1998. It was a huge success in Portugal, reaching a six-time platinum certification (240,000 units sold), but had less success internationally. The album contains 15 songs, including a hidden track, and two versions of "A Little Respect" by Erasure. Most of the songs are in English, with only two in Portuguese: "Sextos Sentidos", a duet with Sérgio Godinho, and "Eu Não Sei Dizer". The songs deal with themes of love, pain, melancholy, loss, death, sorrow, loneliness and nostalgia – themes that are recurrent in Silence 4 and David Fonseca's solo career discography. Both "Borrow" and "My Friends" were highly successful singles in Portugal. Silence 4
Silence 4 were a Portuguese band, formed in 1996, who mostly sung in English. They released two albums to high critical acclaim, ''Silence Becomes It'' (1998) and ''Only Pain Is Real'' (2000). The band never officially disbanded, but went on an undetermined hiatus from 2001 to 2013, when their members decided to reunite for a brief tour after Sofia Lisboa underwent cancer treatment. Lead singer David Fonseca is currently undertaking a solo career. History Formation The band's genesis took place in 1995. After good feedback from showing some demo tapes to a music shop owner in Leiria, David Fonseca approached Sofia Lisboa with the idea of forming a band. PolyGram N.V. was a multinational entertainment company and major music record label formerly based in the Netherlands. ''Only Pain Is Real'' is the second and final studio album by the Portuguese band Silence 4. It was released in July 2000, after the huge success of its predecessor, ''Silence Becomes It''. Recorded in London, the album presented new sounds and fuller orchestrations, with 14 songs all written in English. Musical critics pointed the band's more mature sound and songwriting, mostly done by lead singer David Fonseca. Only two singles were released: "To Give" and "Only Pain Is Real". The album seems somewhat autobiographical or conceptual, even if David Fonseca never clarified if all the lyrics were related or tried to tell a story. Nevertheless, the album shows a new level of maturity and introspection, more consistent then their debut album. The themes of loneliness, sadness, loss, melancholy and hope, are basically the same of their first album, but with an added level of poignancy. Erasure () are an English synth-pop duo formed in London in 1985, consisting of lead vocalist and songwriter Andy Bell (singer), Andy Bell with songwriter, producer and keyboardist Vince Clarke, previously known as co-founder of the band Depeche Mode and a member of synth-pop duo Yazoo (band), Yazoo. Sérgio de Barros Godinho OL (; born 31 August 1945) is a Portuguese singer-songwriter, composer, actor, poet and author. Considered one of the most influential popular musicians in Portugal, Godinho started his music career singing folk songs of ''música de intervenção'' (Portuguese protest songs) while in exile, in the years preceding the Carnation Revolution of 1974 in Portugal, and is regarded as one of the genre's major figures. Besides his music career, Godinho is also a stage and film actor, and has released poetry and fiction books. Early life Sérgio Godinho was born in Porto on 31 August 1945. David Fonseca (, born on 14 June 1973, in Leiria) is a Portuguese musician, singer-songwriter and photographer. As a musician, he plays several instruments, including acoustic guitar and organ. He is recognized for his successful music career as a member of Silence 4 and, since 2003, as a solo artist. He is also responsible for the graphic design on his album covers and the art direction on his videoclips. Between 2004 and 2006, he was also part of the Humanos tribute project. Beginnings David Fonseca studied cinema at the Lisbon Theatre and Film School (Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema) where he attained a bachelor's degree.
