Sigvald Asbjørnsen
Sigvald Asbjørnsen (October 19, 1867 – September 8, 1954) was a Norwegian-born American sculptor. Background Sigvald Asbjørnsen was born in Oslo, Christiania (now Oslo), Norway on October 19, 1867. He studied art with Mathias Skeibrok (1851–1896) and Julius Middelthun and under Brynjulf Bergslien. At the age of 16 he was awarded a stipend from King Oscar II to study at the Royal Academy in Oslo where he worked for five years. He married Margaretha Stuhr and they had three children. Career Sigvald Asbjørnsen emigrated to the United States in 1892, first working in Michigan where he received several important commissions for sculpture. He eventually moved to Chicago where he worked on the buildings for the World Columbian Exposition of 1893. The remainder of his professional career was spent in Chicago where he sculpted a number of public works which were sent to various localities in the United States. Sigvald Mathias Hasund (24 March 1868 – 5 September 1959) was a Norwegian researcher of agriculture and politician for the Liberal Party. He was Minister of Church and Education from 1928 to 1931. He was born in Hasund in Ulstein Municipality as the son of a farmer. He graduated from at the Higher College of Agriculture (from 1897 known as the Norwegian College of Agriculture) in 1890, and from 1890 to 1897 he was a school teacher and headmaster in his native Romsdals Amt. Jarl Sigvaldi was the semi-legendary chieftain of the fabled Jomsvikings and commander of their stronghold - Jomsborg. He succeeded Palnatoke as the leaders of the Jomsvikings in the late 10th century. The character of Sigvaldi remains largely enigmatic. As a leader, he was said to be more wily than brave despite leading such a powerful force. Oscar Sigvald Strugstad (28 November 1887 – 15 March 1953) was a Norwegian military officer. He was born in Kristiania as a son of Oscar Sigvald Julius Strugstad, who was Minister of Defence for a period. He became a Colonel in 1936, and Major General in 1942. In 1939, when Fredrik Monsen tried to name his successor as Minister of Defence, Strugstad was the strongest candidate along with Birger Ljungberg, who was ultimately chosen. During the Second World War Strugstad was a military attaché in Stockholm from 1940 to 1941, leader of the Norwegian Brigade in Scotland from 1941 to 1942, and leader of the Norwegian military mission to the Allied command in London from 1943 to 1945. He was then stationed with the Allied commander in Norway after Germany's defeat, and led ''DK Trøndelag'' from 1945 to 1952.
