Siege Of Kraków Castle
The siege of (the) Kraków Castle was a siege during the War of the Bar Confederation in which the Russian Empire, Russian army, led by Alexander Suvorov, captured Kraków Castle, the Polish castle of Kraków. It took place in 1772, lasted from 4 February to 26 AprilNew Style, N.S.. Background As early as September 1771, Major-General Baron de Vioménil arrived from Kingdom of France, France via Vienna to replace Charles Dumouriez, with a number of officers. The centre of Bar Confederates, Confederate agitation was moved from Eperies to Belitz, on the very border, and Biała, Opole Voivodeship, Biała, which lay against Belitz itself, was chosen as the main stronghold. From here Vioménil hoped to prevent the conquest of the Confederate strongholds until spring and then, with newly organised and increased forces, to launch an offensive, debuting with the capture of the Kraków Castle (Wawel Castle). War Of The Bar Confederation
The Bar Confederation (; 1768–1772) was an association of Polish nobles (''szlachta'') formed at the fortress of Bar in Podolia (now Ukraine), in 1768 to defend the internal and external independence of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth against Russian political influence and against King Stanislaus II Augustus with Polish reformers, who were attempting to limit the power of the Commonwealth's wealthy magnates. The founders of the Bar Confederation included the magnates Adam Stanisław Krasiński, the bishop of Kamieniec, Karol Stanisław Radziwiłł, Casimir Pulaski, his father and brothers and Michał Hieronim Krasiński. Its creation led to a civil war and contributed to the First Partition of Poland. Maurice Benyovszky was the best known European Bar Confederation volunteer, supported by Roman Catholic France and Austria. Some historians consider the Bar Confederation the first Polish uprising.
