Sidney Stanley (cricketer)
Sidney Stanley (born 14 December 1933) is a former cricketer who played first-class cricket in South Africa from 1959 to 1964. A leg-spin bowler, Stanley made his first-class debut for Transvaal B in 1959–60. He was immediately promoted to the Transvaal first team for the Currie Cup A Section match against Western Province, and took 5 for 112 and 5 for 60 in a victory for Transvaal. At the end of the season, he was included in trial matches for the South African tour of England but was not selected for the tour. ''Wisden'' said, "As a leg-spinner he was considered to have the most natural action this country has seen for a long time," and considered him unlucky not to be selected in the touring side. He was less successful for Transvaal in 1960–61, and played for North Eastern Transvaal Northerns (formerly North Eastern Transvaal and Northern Transvaal) has played first-class cricket in South Africa since December 1937. Western Province Cricket Team
Western Province is the team representing Western Cape province in domestic first-class cricket in South Africa. The team began playing in January 1890 and its main venue has always been Newlands in Cape Town. Under the reorganisation of professional South African cricket in the 1990s and more recently, Western Province joined with Boland to form the side that now plays in the SuperSport Series under the name Cape Cobras and divides its time between Newlands and the Boland Park ground in Paarl. Western Province still competes under its provincial name in the UCB Provincial series. Gauteng Cricketers
Gauteng ( ) is one of the nine provinces of South Africa. The name in Sotho-Tswana languages means 'place of gold'. Situated on the Highveld, Gauteng is the smallest province by land area in South Africa. Although Gauteng accounts for only 1.5% of the country's land area, it is home to more than a quarter of its population (26%). Highly urbanised, the province contains the country's largest city, Johannesburg, which is also one of the largest cities in the world. Currie Cup (cricket)
The CSA 4-Day Domestic Series is the domestic first class cricket competition of South Africa. The tournament is contested by teams from all nine provinces of South Africa. First contested as the Currie Cup from 1889–90, the tournament has undergone many changes and modifications in its history. In 2004, the traditional province based format was replaced, with many teams amalgamating. In its place six entirely professional franchises were created that represented much larger population areas. The competition underwent significant restructuring once again before the start of the 2021–22 season. The six team franchise system was disbanded and the tournament returned to its more traditional format. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs.
