Sidney Martin
Sidney Hugh Martin (11 January 1909 – 13 February 1988) was a South African first-class cricketer who played 267 first-class games in both South African and English cricket. He was the uncle of South Africa Test cricketer Hugh Tayfield. Martin made his first-class debut in the Currie Cup for Natal against Eastern Province in March 1926, taking two second-innings wickets including that of Arthur Ochse. He played two more games (both also against Natal) the following season, taking six wickets in the first match and scoring 64 not out in the first innings of the second game. In 1929 Martin made his debut in England, playing for MCC against Oxford University at Lord's, and although he returned to Natal during the English winters,Obituary. Oxford University Cricket Club (OUCC), which represents the University of Oxford, has always held first-class status since 1827 when it made its debut in the inaugural University Match between OUCC and Cambridge University Cricket Club (CUCC). It was classified as a List A team in 1973 only. Home fixtures are played at the University Parks slightly northeast of Oxford city centre. Transvaal Cricket Team
Gauteng (formerly Transvaal) is the first-class cricket team of the southern parts of Gauteng province of South Africa. The team was called ''Transvaal'' from April 1890 to April 1997 (the area north of Johannesburg, including Pretoria being part of the Northerns, formerly ''Northern Transvaal''). Under the main competition's various names – the Currie Cup, then the Castle Cup, now the SuperSport Series – Transvaal/Gauteng cricket team has been the most successful of the South African domestic sides, winning 25 times. Sussex County Cricket Club is the oldest of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Sussex. Its limited overs team is called the Sussex Sharks. The club was founded in 1839 as a successor to the various Sussex county cricket teams, including the old Brighton Cricket Club, which had been representative of the county of Sussex as a whole since the 1720s. The club has always held first-class status. Northamptonshire County Cricket Club
Northamptonshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Northamptonshire. Its limited overs team is called the Northants Steelbacks – a reference to the Northamptonshire Regiment which was formed in 1881. The name was supposedly a tribute to the soldiers' apparent indifference to the harsh discipline imposed by their officers. Founded in 1878, Northamptonshire (Northants) held minor status at first but was a prominent member of the early Minor Counties Championship during the 1890s. Double (cricket)
A cricketer is said to achieve the double if he scores a thousand or more runs and also takes a hundred or more wickets in first-class matches during the course of a single season. The feat is extremely rare outside England because of the smaller number of first-class matches played in most other countries; it has also become very uncommon in England in recent decades because of the reduction in the first-class programme in favour of more List A matches, last being achieved by Franklyn Stephenson in 1988. Wilfred Rhodes performed the double more often than anyone else, 16 times. George Hirst achieved the feat on 14 occasions, including a unique "double double" in 1906 of 2385 runs and 208 wickets, and Jim Parks senior managed the unique double of 3000 runs and 100 wickets in 1937. County Championship
The County Championship (referred to as the LV= Insurance County Championship for sponsorship reasons) is the domestic first-class cricket competition in England and Wales and is organised by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). It became an official title in 1890. The competition consists of eighteen clubs named after, and representing historic counties, seventeen from England and one from Wales. The earliest known inter-county match was played in 1709. British Army Cricket Team
The Army cricket team is a cricket side representing the British Army. The Army team played 51 first-class matches between 1912 and 1939, although a combined Army and Navy side had played two games against a combined Oxford and Cambridge team in 1910 and 1911. In 1927 the Army played the touring New Zealanders, and in 1933 they played the touring West Indians. After the Second World War, for first-class purposes the Army team amalgamated with the Navy and Air Force teams to form the Combined Services team, which played first-class cricket until 1964. Garrison 1 Cricket Ground is a cricket ground in Chatham, Kent. The ground is owned by the Ministry of Defence and has been used by military teams throughout its history, being linked with the various military establishments at Chatham.
