Sidney Dara Blandford
Sidney Dara Blandford (June 12, 1868 – November 28, 1929) was a lawyer and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Bonavista in the Legislative Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador from 1904 to 1913 as a Conservative and then as a member of the People's Party. His first name appears in some sources as Sydney. He was born in Greenspond, the son of Samuel Blandford. He was educated in St. John's and practised law there. He served in the Executive Council as Minister of Agriculture and Mines. Blandford was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1913. He was named to the Legislative Council of Newfoundland in the same year, serving until 1917, when he was named High Sheriff. Blandford was one of the founding owners of the Newfoundland Hotel in St. John's. Bonavista Bay
Bonavista Bay (BB) is a large bay located on the northeast coast of the island of Newfoundland in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada. It opens directly onto the Atlantic Ocean. The bay is demarcated by Cape Freels to the north and Cape Bonavista to the south. Cape Bonavista is also the eastern limit of the Bonavista Peninsula, which forms the bay's southern shore. The topography of the central western shore of the bay is composed of numerous channels and islands. This area also hosts Terra Nova National Park. Containing many densely forested islands, Bonavista Bay is virtually landlocked. With temperatures sometimes reaching -1 °C, it attracts the occasional iceberg. However, due to the dense forestry, the region inside the bay can sometimes be warm enough for lobster cultivation. Legislative Assembly Of Newfoundland And Labrador
The Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly is the unicameral deliberative assembly of the General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It meets in the Confederation Building in St. John's. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the King of Canada in Right of Newfoundland and Labrador, represented by the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. The governing party sits on the left side of the speaker of the House of Assembly as opposed to the traditional right side of the speaker. This tradition dates back to the 1850s as the heaters in the Colonial Building were located on the left side. Newfoundland People's Party
The Newfoundland People's Party was a political party in the Dominion of Newfoundland before it joined Canada. The party was created by Attorney-General Edward Patrick Morris in 1907, when he split from the ruling Liberal Party to found his own political vehicle. The party tied with the Liberals in the 1908 election but, when no party was able to form a government, new elections were held which the People's Party won with 26 seats to 10 for the Liberals. Morris and the People's Party were re-elected in the 1913 election, winning 16 seats compared to 7 for the Liberals and 8 for the Fishermen's Protective Union led by William Coaker. In 1917, a wartime crisis over conscription resulted in Morris inviting the opposition parties to join in a National Government, which ruled for two years. Greenspond, Newfoundland And Labrador
Greenspond is a community in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Greenspond is one of the communities that comprise an area called Bonavista North, in Bonavista Bay, on the northeast coast of the Island of Newfoundland. These communities have a shared history in that they were settled by people from England, predominantly from the West Country: Somerset, Devon, Dorset and Hampshire. Greenspond is one of the oldest continuously inhabited outports in Newfoundland, having been settled in the 1690s. In the first 100 years after settlement, the people of Greenspond lived from the bounty of the sea. Samuel Blandford
Samuel Blandford (August 10, 1840 – March 8, 1909) was a sealing captain and political figure in the Newfoundland Colony. He represented Bonavista Bay in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1889 to 1893 as a Liberal. He was born in Greenspond, the son of Darius Blandford. He first took part in the seal fishery with his father at the age of 13. In 1874, he was named captain of the steamship ''Osprey'', which was lost in April of that year. Blandford married Sarah A. Edgar. He also managed a cod fishing operation on the Labrador coast and was captain of a ship providing mail service from 1875 to 1883. In 1893, he was named to the Legislative Council of Newfoundland and served until his death in St. John's at the age of 68. His daughter Josephine married William C. Winsor. Legislative Council Of Newfoundland
The Legislative Council of Newfoundland was the upper house of the General Assembly of Newfoundland from 1833 to 1934. The Legislative Council was appointed by the Governor of Newfoundland, not elected. Bills were submitted by the House of Assembly to the Council, which could approve, reject or amend them; if amended, bills were returned to the House of Assembly for approval. From 1842 to 1848, the elected House of Assembly and appointed Legislative Council sat together as a single Amalgamated Assembly. After 1848, the two legislative bodies again sat separately. In 1854, the British Government granted a new constitution to Newfoundland establishing an Executive Council of not more than seven members of the majority party and a Legislative Council of not more than 15 members upon nomination of the ministry. The Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland is a 4-star hotel in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, operating under the Marriott International banner.
