Short track speed skating at the Winter Olympics, Short track speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing, China. The events took place between 5 and 16 February 2022. A total of nine short track speed skating events were held. In July 2018, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) officially added the mixed relay held over a distance of 2000 metres, increasing the total number of events to nine. Due to the addition of the event, the competition schedule was increased to six days from five. A total of 112 quota spots (56 per gender) were distributed to the sport, a decline of eight from the 2018 Winter Olympics. A total of nine events were contested, four for men, four for women and one mixed. Qualification A total quota of 112 athletes were scheduled to compete (56 men and 56 women). Ren Ziwei (born 3 June 1997) is a Chinese short track speed-skater. He won a bronze medal in men's 1500 meters in 2014 World Junior Championships in Erzurum, Turkey. With his three teammates Chen Guang, Xu Fu and Sui Xin, he had also won the gold medal in men's 3000 meter relay race. Ren competed in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, and won gold in the men's 1000 meters, while his compatriot Li Wenlong took the silver. Ren and Li had actually finished 2nd and 3rd behind Hungary's Shaolin Sándor Liu, who was disqualified for a lane violation and an arm block on Ren at the finish. Pietro Sighel (born 15 July 1999) is an Italian short track speed skater. He was second in the overall classification at the 2021 European Championships in Gdańsk, where he also secured silver medals in both 500 m and 5000 m relay competitions. He won three bronze medals at the 2021 World Championships in Dordrecht. Sighel's first World Cup successes came during the 2021-22 season. 24 October 2021 he together with Andrea Cassinelli, Yuri Confortola, and Tommaso Dotti finished third in 5000 m men's relay in Beijing. Charles Hamelin (born April 14, 1984) is a Canadian retired short track speed skater. In a competitive career that spanned nearly twenty years on the international circuit, Hamelin participated in five Winter Olympic Games (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022) and won six Olympic medals, including a national-best four gold medals.
