Shopping.com is a price comparison service owned by eBay and operates websites in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Australia. Shopping.com started out with the name DealTime.com which now redirects users to Shopping.com. History Shopping.com began as Papricom (DealTime.com), which was founded in Israel in 1998 by Dr. Nahum Sharfman and Amir Ashkenazi, the original business model was to create a downloadable client that would monitor changes in prices of products the user seeks to buy over time, notifying the user when the product price reached a predetermined level (hence the site's original name, DealTime). Originally targeting American consumers, the basic concept was quickly modified from a downloadable client to a purely web-based service, a concept the company has kept ever since. Epinions
Epinions.com was a general consumer review site established in 1999. Epinions was acquired in 2003 by DealTime, later Shopping.com, which was acquired by eBay in 2005. Epinions users could access paid product reviews; the company sold advertising on its site and shared the revenue with authors as an incentive for quality content. Competition from sites that crowdsourced reviews for free led to years of financial decline. On 25 March 2014, all community features, and features for submitting and editing reviews, were disabled. Subsequently, in May 2018, the site was fully closed down, and URLs in the epinions.com domain redirect to Shopping.com. Nahum Sharfman
Nahum Sharfman () was an Israelis, Israeli tech entrepreneur who, along with Amir Ashkenazi, founded Shopping.com. Shopping.com was later acquired by eBay for $650 million. He was also the Chairman of social content sharing site eSnips Ltd. Prior to shopping.com, Sharfman co-founded the IT security company Commtouch for which he served as the Chairman of the Board from its inception in February 1991 to November 1997. Commtouch IPO'ed in 2000. Prior to starting his own ventures, Sharfman spent 11 years working for National Semiconductor. He received a Ph.D. in High Energy Nuclear Physics from Carnegie Mellon University and M.S. and B.S. degrees in Physics from the Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology. Sharfman and his wife, Nava, died in a plane crash on the Mount Ainos in the Ionian Islands, Ioanian island of Kefallinia, Cephallonia, Greece while en route to Corfu on April 29, 2009. Amir Ashkenazi (Hebrew: אמיר אשכנזי) is an American-Israeli entrepreneur. He is the chief executive officer and founder of Switchboard and former CEO of Adap.tv, which was purchased by AOL for $405 million in 2013. Ashkenazi co-founded Adap.tv in 2007 and was CEO until 2014. After the sale, the company became a division of AOL Platforms, of which Ashkenazi is president.
