Shmuel Raayoni
Shmuel Raayoni (May 4, 1905 – December 22, 1995) (Hebrew: שמואל רעיוני) was an Israeli painter, member of New Horizons, teacher and educator and founding member of Ein-Hod Artist Village. Biography Shmuel Raayoni was born as Shmuel Maslovati in 1905 to a Zionist family in Žiežmariai – a town near Kaunas, then the capital of Lithuania. Encouraged by Boris Schatz, the founder of Bezalel, Raayoni immigrated to Palestine, alone, in 1923 and enrolled in the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts. During those years, Aharon Avni, Arie Aroch, Moshe Castel Yehezkel Streichman, Avigdor Stematsky, and Zeev Ben-Zvi, studied there as well. In 1927, Raayoni completed his studies at Bezalel and moved to the town of Petach Tikva where he worked at odd jobs, including teaching of painting. Žiežmariai
Žiežmariai () is a city in the Kaišiadorys district municipality, Lithuania. It is located south of Kaišiadorys. The center of Žiežmariai is a state-protected urbanistic monument. History Žiežmariai were mentioned for the first time in the 14th century in the '' Lithuanian route report'' (''Wegeberichte''), prepared by the Teutonic Knights. In 1348 close to Žiežmariai by the river of Strėva, the Battle of Strėva between the Grand Ducal Lithuanian Army led by Algirdas and Kęstutis and the Teutonic Army took place. Since 15th century Žiežmariai estate is known, in 1487 Žiežmariai town is mentioned. In 1508 or 1509 a Catcholic church was built, and the school was established in 1520. Arie Aroch
Arie Aroch (in Hebrew אריה ארוך; born 1908, in Russia – October 15, 1974, in Israel) was an Israeli painter and diplomat born in Kharkiv, which was part of the Russian Empire. Aroch's work was a mixture of Pop Art and abstract art, along with elements from his biography. In addition, many scholars of the history of Israeli art have pointed out Aroch's pioneering use of Jewish themes in his works. His painting style included unstructured scribbling and drawing, and it influenced a broad range of artists, including Raffi Lavie, Aviva Uri, etc. Sarah Breitberg Semel, in her article, ''Agrippa versus Nimrod'' (1988), suggested Aroch as a model for the new Israeli concept of design in art, and suggested his painting, ''Agrippas Street'' was the representative of Jewish identity. The Académie de la Grande Chaumière is an art school in the Montparnasse district of Paris, France. History The school was founded in 1904 by the Catalan painter Claudio Castelucho on the rue de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, near the Académie Colarossi. From 1909, the Académie was jointly directed by painters Martha Stettler, Alice Dannenberg, and Lucien Simon. Avigdor Stematsky
Avigdor Stematsky (1908–1989) was a Russian Empire-born Israeli painter. He is considered one of the pioneers of Israeli abstract art. Biography Stematsky was born in 1908 in Odessa. He joined the Massad group in Tel Aviv. In 1929, he went to Paris to study at Académie de la Grande Chaumière and Académie Colarossi. He was one of the founders of the New Horizons group. He held his first solo exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art at the age of 31. In the constellation of Israel art, Stematsky and Yehezkiel Streichman stand out as a pair. Although each developed his own distinct, individual style, there are many points of affinity between them: a common background as students of Bezalel in the 1920s, a response to the influences of the Jewish School of Paris in the 1930s, and of the "modern" (late cubist) art in the 1940s and fifties, when they were also leading teachers in Tel Aviv. Yehezkel Streichman
Yehezkel Streichman ( he, יחזקאל שטרייכמן, 1906 – January 12, 1993) was an Israeli painter. He is considered a pioneer of Israeli modernist painting. Among the awards that he won were the Dizengoff Prize and the Israel Prize. Biography Yehezkel Streichman was born in Kovno, Russian Empire (now Lithuania). He studied at the local gymnasium, was a member of Hashomer Hatza'ir, and emigrated to Palestine in 1924. Art career Streichman studied at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design with Arie Aroch in 1924–27. He then completed his studies in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts (1927) and in Florence at the Academy of Art (1928–31). He taught painting throughout his life; in elementary and high schools in 1936, at Kibbutz Ashdot Yaakov in 1941, and at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv in 1944 and from 1954–79. Moshe Castel
Moshe Castel ( he, משה קסטל; 1909 – December 12, 1991) was an Israeli painter. Biography Moshe Elazar Castel born in Jerusalem, Ottoman Palestine, in 1909, to Rabbi Yehuda Castel and his wife Rachel. The family was descended from Spanish Jews from Castile who immigrated to the Holy Land after the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. His father was born in Hebron. He opened religious schools for Sephardi boys in the Nahalat Shiv'a and Bukharim quarters of Jerusalem. Moshe grew up in the Bukharim neighborhood, where he attended his father's school. At the age of 13, he was accepted to the Bezalel Art School, directed by Boris Schatz, where he studied from 1921 to 1925. His teacher, Shmuel Ben David, encouraged him to study art in Paris. Castel traveled to Paris in 1927, where he attended Académie Julian and Ecole du Louvre. Bezalel
In Exodus 31:1-6 and chapters 36 to 39, Bezalel, Bezaleel, or Betzalel ( he, בְּצַלְאֵל, ''Bəṣalʼēl''), was the chief artisan of the Tabernacle and was in charge of building the Ark of the Covenant, assisted by Oholiab. Boris Schatz
Boris Schatz ( he, בוריס שץ; 23 December 1866 – 23 March 1932) was a Lithuanian Jewish artist and sculptor who settled in Israel. Schatz, who became known as the "father of Israeli art," founded the Bezalel School in Jerusalem. After Schatz died, part of his art collection, including a famous self portrait by Dutch Master Jozef Israëls, given to him by the artist, eventually became the nucleus of the Israel Museum.
