Shkval Battalion
Shkval Battalion is a Ukrainian military unit made up of former convicts. It was formed after the Verkhovna Rada passed Registered draft law No. 11079 which allowed for the mobilization of convicts into the Ukrainian Army. History Formation Members of the battalion are offered wages ranging from $500 to $4,000 per month, depending on time spent on the front line. However, they are required serve in the military until the end of the war. Members of the battalion were then trained by other Ukrainian units. In September 2024, the 59th Brigade's Shkval battalion told reporters that they are making legal requests in order to allow more murderers of various degrees to join their ranks. Penal Military Unit
A penal military unit, also known as a penal formation, disciplinary unit, or just penal unit (usually named for their formation and size, such as ''penal battalion'' for battalions, ''penal regiment'' for regiments, ''penal company'' for companies, etc.), is a military formation consisting of convicts mobilized for military service. 57th Motorized Brigade (Ukraine)
The 57th Otaman Kost Hordiienko Motorized Brigade () is a formation of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. The brigade was formed beginning in November 2014 in the city of Kropyvnytskyi in Kirovohrad Oblast. Initially, the brigade consisted of three volunteer Territorial defence battalions (Ukraine), territorial defence battalions. By the summer of 2015, the brigade was deployed to fight in the War in Donbas (2014–2022), war in Donbas. The ground forces plan to mechanize the brigade in the future. On 6 May 2019, the brigade received the honorary name of Kost Hordiienko, a Zaporozhian Cossack Kosh otaman of the 18th century. During the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the brigade received the recently established "For Courage and Bravery" award by Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy for liberating a number of settlements in the Kherson Oblast.
