Shirley Pettibone
Shirley Pettibone (1936 – 2011) was an American painter known for painting, and cloth sculpture. Pettibone was born in Bakersfield, California in 1936. She attended Principia College and the Otis Art Institute. She was married to fellow artist Richard Pettibone. The marriage ended in divorce. She died on February 23, 2011 in Los Angeles. Pettibone's work was included in the 1971 exhibition ''Twenty Six Contemporary Women Artists'' held at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum and the 2022 exhibition ''52 Artists: A Feminist Milestone'' also at the Aldrich. Principia College
Principia College is a private liberal arts college in Elsah, Illinois. It was founded in 1912 by Mary Kimball Morgan with the purpose of "serving the Cause of Christian Science." Morgan wrote in her book, Education at the Principia that, "Although the College is not affiliated with the Christian Science Church, the practice of Christian Science is the cornerstone of campus life." The college's student body included students from 26 faith backgrounds and no longer requires its students or their parents to be students of Christian Science or Christian Science Church members. Richard Pettibone
Richard Pettibone (b.January 5, 1938, Alhambra, California – d. August 19, 2024, Cobleskill, New York) was an American artist. He was known for duplicating in miniature noted contemporary artworks. He copied paintings, including those by Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, and Roy Lichtenstein and sculptures including Warhol's Brillo boxes and Duchamp's readymades. The FLAG Art Foundation describes Pettibone's style as Appropriation Art. Pettibone attended the Otis Art Institute. His first wife was fellow artist Shirley Pettibone. That marriage ended in divorce. ''Twenty Six Contemporary Women Artists'' was an art exhibition held at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum from April 18 - June 13, 1971. It was the first show curated by Lucy R. Lippard. Lippard only included artists who had never had a solo exhibition. It featured 26 emerging New York based women artists. The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum
The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum is located in Ridgefield, Connecticut. The Aldrich has no permanent collection and is the only museum in Connecticut that is dedicated solely to the exhibition of contemporary art.
