Shirley Cripps
Shirley Anne Cripps (born September 11, 1935) was a provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. She served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1979 to 1989. During her time in the Alberta Legislature she served in the Executive Council of Alberta from 1986 to 1989. Political career Cripps ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature for the first time in the 1979 Alberta general election. She won the electoral district of Drayton Valley to hold it for the governing Progressive Conservative caucus. She was easily re-elected in the 1982 Alberta general election with a larger plurality defeating two other candidates. She was run for her third and final term in the 1986 Alberta general election. Cripps won the biggest margin of victory in her political career. After the election she was appointed Associate Minister of Agriculture by Premier Don Getty. 1982 Alberta General Election
The 1982 Alberta general election was held on November 2, 1982, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Less than four years had passed since the Progressive Conservatives won their landslide victory in 1979. Premier Peter Lougheed decided to call a snap election to catch fledgling new parties off guard, most notably the separatist Western Canada Concept which was capitalizing on anger over Lougheed's perceived weakness in dealings with the federal government, in particular his acceptance of the hugely unpopular National Energy Program. The WCC's Gordon Kesler had won a by-election earlier in the year, and Lougheed decided that it would be wise to stage a showdown with the WCC sooner rather than later. 1979 Alberta General Election
The 1979 Alberta general election was held on March 14, 1979, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, which had been expanded to 79 seats. The Progressive Conservative Party of Peter Lougheed won its third consecutive term in government. During the campaign, some Progressive Conservatives spoke of winning "79 in '79", i.e., all 79 seats in the legislature. This harkened back to Social Credit's unofficial slogan from the 1963 election, "63 in '63". The Tories came up short of this goal, and actually lost over five percentage points of the popular vote. Nonetheless, they still won an overwhelming majority, with 74 seats. Social Credit held on to the four seats they had won in the 1975 election, and formed the official opposition in the legislature.
