The Shire of Korumburra was a Local government in Australia, local government area located about southeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1891 until 1994. History Originally part of the Shire of Buln Buln, Korumburra was first incorporated as the Shire of Poowong and Jeetho on 29 May 1891. Its boundaries were initially fairly flexible, as it annexed parts of the Rural City of Warragul, Warragul and Shire of Woorayl, Woorayl Shires, settling on its final boundaries by 1912. West Gippsland
West Gippsland is a region of Gippsland in Victoria, Australia. It covers an area of around the eastern shores of the Western Port Bay, extending from San Remo in the west to the Strzelecki Ranges in the east, up to Mount Howitt in the north. History Mirboo was first incorporated as a shire out of parts of the East and West Ridings of the Shire of Narracan, and the East Riding of the Shire of Woorayl, on 13 April 1894. Outtrim, Victoria
Outtrim is a locality in Victoria, Australia. It is located south of Korumburra off the Korumburra to Wonthaggi Road and is southeast of Melbourne. History The original European settlers in the mid-19th century used the area for farming, but coal was discovered south of what would become Outtrim railway station in 1892. The Outtrim and Jumbunna coal fields developed in the mid-1890s, with access to the markets for the coal being established via the Outtrim railway line. The township grew up by the mine and was named after the Honourable Alfred Richard Outtrim, MLA, Minister of Mines in the Victorian Government at the time. Outtrim Primary School opened in January 1890 and closed in 1993. When the coal mines were at their peak more than 200 children attended the four-roomed school. Kongwak is a town in Victoria, Australia. It is located on the Korumburra to Wonthaggi Road southeast of Melbourne, in the South Gippsland Shire. At the 2016 census, Kongwak had a population of 197. The town in conjunction with neighbouring township Inverloch has an Australian Rules football team competing in the Alberton Football League. Jumbunna is a town in South Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. The name is taken from the eastern Kulin language of the Bunnerong tribe and means "a place to meet and talk". Today the community of Jumbunna consists of 13 houses and about 30 residents in the township and 29 houses and 50 residents in the surrounding rural area. Bena is a town in the South Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. It is located 100 km south-east of Melbourne and 8 km from Korumburra. History The area was heavily timbered temperate rainforest when settlers began to arrive to take up land after a new settler-friendly Land Act was introduced by the Victorian government in 1878. The only access to the region was via McDonald's Track, a narrow path cut through the forest in 1862 by a team led by surveyor G. T. McDonald. It took years for the first selectors to clear enough land on their blocks to earn a living from their properties. The lack of roads, and no rail access, was a major problem for the first arrivals.
