Peterborough Lift Lock
The Peterborough Lift Lock is a boat lift located on the Trent Canal in the city of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, and is Lock 21 on the Trent-Severn Waterway. For many years, the lock's dual lifts were the highest hydraulic boat lifts in the world, raising boats . This was a considerable accomplishment in the first years of the 20th century, when conventional locks usually only had a rise. In the 1980s, a visitor centre was built beside the lock. It offers interactive simulations of going over the lift lock in a boat, and historical exhibits detailing the construction of the lift lock. Residents and visitors skate on the canal below the lift lock in the winter. Fonsérannes Locks
Fonseranes Locks (, ) are a flight of staircase locks on the Canal du Midi near Béziers. They consist of eight oval-shaped lock chambers, characteristic of the Canal du Midi, and nine gates, which allow boats to be raised a height of over a distance of . The flight was originally built as an eight-rise, which together with the ninth lock (the , to the northeast) allowed boats to cross the Orb river on a level and re-enter the canal further downstream. The "nine locks" name dates from this time. However, in 1858 an aqueduct was built to replace the crossing of the Orb. Boats now enter and leave the lower end of the flight through the side of chamber seven, which is permanently kept at its upper water level. The flight is therefore effectively made up of six locks. The lower gates of the seventh chamber are now permanently closed; the eighth chamber and the ninth lock, the pre-1858 route descending to the Orb, are disused. Fontinettes Boat Lift
The Fontinettes Boat Lift (French: ''Ascenseur des Fontinettes or Ascenseur à bateaux des Fontinettes'' was built in 1888 on the Canal de Neufossé and connected the river Aa and the Neuffossé Canal in Arques, near Saint-Omer in the Pas-de-Calais. Design The boat lift was designed by Edwin Clark (who also designed the Anderton Boat Lift) and M. Bertin a French engineer. The metal was supplied by Société des anciens établissements Cail (now the ). Description The Fontinettes Boat Lift was capable of lifting vessels of 300 tonnes displacement. It was designed to avoid the need to use five locks, which took some 90 minutes, to change height by 13 metres. It was inspired by the similar Anderton Boat Lift built in 1875 in Cheshire, England. Probe International
Energy Probe is a non-governmental social, economic, and environmental policy organization based in Toronto, Canada known recently for denying man-made climate change. It was founded in 1970 as a sister project of Pollution Probe. In this early period, the focus was on the publicly owned Ontario Hydro's predictions of energy usage seeing continual growth and their demands to build a huge fleet of nuclear reactors to service this demand. They published a number of reports in the late 1970s estimating usage in 2000 would be significantly below that predicted by Hydro, numbers that were matched by those of the Ontario Ministry of Energy's own calculations, and eventually, Hydro itself. Longtan Dam
Longtan Dam () is a large roller-compacted concrete (RCC) gravity dam on the Hongshui River in Tian'e County of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, a tributary of the Xi River and the Pearl River. The dam is high and long; it is the tallest of its type in the world. The dam is intended for hydroelectric power production, flood control and navigation. The dam contains seven surface spillways, two bottom outlets and an underground power station. The Longtan ship lift, part of the dam complex, will be the tallest ship lift system in the world.
