ShipGoo001
ShipGoo001 is a mixture of apparently newly-discovered forms of microbial life, found upon a ship in the Great Lakes. It was discovered in 2024, as a slimy tar-like material, on the research vessel ''Blue Heron''. Preliminary studies indicate that there are two completely new species, one each of archaea and bacteria. Discovery In summer 2024, the research vessel ''Blue Heron'' was studying algal blooms in Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes spanning the Canada–United States border. It went to a shipyard at the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, to be inspected for what turned out to be damaged propeller shaft bearings. While examining the ship, the captain, Rual Lee, observed a black slimy substance oozing from near the rudder, and was concerned that a potential pollutant might have been coming out of the ship. Large Lakes Observatory
The Large Lakes Observatory (or LLO) is a research institute located in Duluth, Minnesota, USA which studies the major lakes of the world. The researchers focus on a variety of sciences including aquatic chemistry, geochemistry and paleoclimatology. Its stated purpose dedicates the LLO to "performing innovative, cross-disciplinary research, education, and outreach that advance scientific understanding of Earth’s large lakes for the benefit of society and the sustainability of freshwaters." RV ''Blue Heron'' is a research vessel serving on the Laurentian Great Lakes. She is owned by the University of Minnesota Duluth, and operated by the Large Lakes Observatory in partnership with the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System. The Blue Heron is the largest research ship owned by a university operating on the Great Lakes, and the second-smallest UNOLS vessel by LOA.
