Shinyanga, also known as Mji wa Shinyanga in the national language, is a city in northern Tanzania. The city is the location of the regional headquarters of Shinyanga Region as well as the district headquarters of Shinyanga Urban District. The region and district are named after the town. Shinyanga Region
Shinyanga Region (''Mkoa wa Shinyanga'' in Swahili language, Swahili) is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative Regions of Tanzania, regions. The region covers a land area of . The region is comparable in size to the combined land area of the nation state of Fiji. The region is bordered to the north by the Mwanza Region, Mwanza, Mara Region, Mara, and Kagera Region, Kagera Regions and to the south by the Tabora Region. The Kigoma Region borders the region to the west, and the Simiyu Region and a sliver of Singida Region to the east. The regional capital is the municipality of Shinyanga. Shinyanga Airport is an airport serving the small city of Shinyanga, the capital of the Shinyanga Region of Tanzania. It is northeast of the municipality, off the B6 road. The airport is also known as Ibadakuli Airport. As of 2021, there are 31 regions of Tanzania, regions (Swahili: mkoa, plural mikoa) of Tanzania which are divided into 184 districts (Swahili: wilayah, wilaya). Tanzania, officially the United Republic of Tanzania, is a country in East Africa within the African Great Lakes region. Mwanza
Mwanza City, also known as Rock City to the residents, is a port city and capital of Mwanza Region on the southern shore of Lake Victoria in north-western Tanzania. With an urban population of 1,104,521 and a population of 3,699,872 in the region (2022 census), it is Tanzania's second largest city, after Dar es Salaam. It is also the second largest city in the Lake Victoria basin after Kampala, Uganda and ahead of Kisumu, Kenya at least in population size. Within the East African community, Mwanza city is the fifth largest city after Dar es Salaam, Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kampala. It is slightly ahead of Kigali, Kisumu, and Bujumbura in the population of city proper limits. Williamson Diamond Mine
The Williamson Diamond Mine (also known as the Mwadui mine) is a diamond mine northeast of Shinyanga in Tanzania; it became well known as the first significant diamond mine outside of South Africa. The kimberlite pipe was found in March 1940 and the mine established by John Williamson, a Canadian geologist, and has been continuous operation since then, making it one of the oldest continuously operating diamond mines in the world. Over its lifetime it has produced over 19 million carats (3,800 kg) of diamonds. A 2020 report by ''The Guardian'' said that high-quality pink diamonds from the mine could value up to $700,000 a carat. The Williamson mine was once owned by its namesake Williamson and later nationalized by the government of Tanzania. Since February 2009 the mine is mostly owned by Petra Diamonds, with 75% ownership, the government of Tanzania owning the remaining 25%. The Central Line (), formerly known as the Tanganyika Railway () is the most important railway line in Tanzania, apart from TAZARA.
