Shinya Yanagi
Shinya Yanagi (柳晋哉, born 1987, Tokyo) is a Japanese artisan specializing in tsumugi dyeing and weaving. He is the grandson of the weaver Yoshihiro Yanagi, who is the nephew of Sōetsu Yanagi, who is known as the father of the Mingei The concept of , variously translated into English as " folk craft", "folk art" or "popular art", was developed from the mid-1920s in Japan by a philosopher and aesthete, Yanagi Sōetsu (1889–1961), together with a group of craftsmen, includin ... Tsumugi
is a traditional slub (textiles), slub-woven silk fabric from Japan. It is a tabby weave material woven from yarn produced using silk noil, short-staple (textiles), staple silk fibre (as opposed to material produced using longer, filament yarn silk fibres). The short silk fibres are degummed and, traditionally, the yarns are hand-joined to form a continuous length before weaving, a technique also used for cheaper bast fibres. Yarns are joined by twisting the ends to be joined in the same direction, then twisting both ends, bundled together, in the other direction, to make a plying, two-ply yarn at the overlap. It might alternately be loosely handspun, with twist per inch, few twists per unit length. Because of this structure, is rough-surfaced, soft and drapey, softening further with age. Mingei
The concept of , variously translated into English as " folk craft", "folk art" or "popular art", was developed from the mid-1920s in Japan by a philosopher and aesthete, Yanagi Sōetsu (1889–1961), together with a group of craftsmen, including the potters Hamada Shōji (1894–1978) and Kawai Kanjirō (1890–1966). As such, it was a conscious attempt to distinguish ordinary crafts and functional utensils (pottery, lacquerware, textiles, and so on) from "higher" forms of art – at the time much admired by people during a period when Japan was going through rapid westernisation, industrialisation, and urbanization. In some ways, therefore, ''mingei'' may be seen as a reaction to Japan's rapid modernisation processes.
