Shifting City
''Shifting City'' is an album by John Foxx and Louis Gordon, released in 1997 (although some sources cite 1995 as the release year). Released simultaneously with Foxx's ambient album ''Cathedral Oceans'', ''Shifting City'' was Foxx's first album release since '' In Mysterious Ways'' (1985). Stylistically ''Shifting City'' marked a return to the electronic sound of Foxx's 1980 solo album ''Metamatic'', although it also shows an influence of 1960s The Beatles-style psychedelia, a style which Foxx had already experimented with on 1983's ''The Golden Section''. A 2 CD special edition was released in October 2009, including three previously unreleased bonus tracks. John Foxx
John Foxx (born Dennis Leigh; 26 September 1948) is an English singer, musician, artist, photographer, graphic designer, writer, teacher and lecturer. He was the original lead singer of the new wave band Ultravox, before leaving to embark on a solo career in 1980 with the album '' Metamatic''. Primarily associated with electronic synthesizer music, he has also pursued a parallel career in graphic design and education. Andy Kellman of AllMusic described Foxx as an influential cult figure whose "detached, jolting vocal style inspired mainstream and underground artists across the decades." Early life and education Leigh was born in Chorley, Lancashire, England. His father was a coal miner and pugilist, his mother a millworker. Louis Gordon
Louis Gordon (born 1965) is an English musician notable for his collaboration with John Foxx. He has worked with Foxx on a number of albums since 1995. His solo work has also been released on the Toffeetones record label. Biography John Foxx had met Louis Gordon after watching one of his concerts. The concert was at Berrington Hall, near Shrewsbury and was in aid of Louis' birthday (in January 1995). Gordon was said to be "blown away" by their meeting. He was later contacted by Foxx, who asked about making a record together. Their first recording was made in Manchester. Gordon began playing the drums as a child, later progressing to bass guitar and guitar. He now predominantly plays keyboards and guitar doing one-man shows with guest appearances by friends. Cathedral Oceans
''Cathedral Oceans'' (after 2003 also referred to as ''Cathedral Oceans I'') is an album of ambient music by John Foxx, released in 1997. Alongside ''Shifting City'' released on the same day, it marked Foxx's return to the music scene after an absence of seven years. It was also his first solo album since 1985's In Mysterious Ways. The album's artwork consists of collages by Foxx himself, overlaying various pictures and textures with the faces of statues. ''Cathedral Oceans'' is a long ongoing project by Foxx; the first recordings that appear on this album were made as early 1983. In 1987 ''Cathedral Oceans'' material was played live by Foxx in various buildings, gardens and cathedrals in England and Rome. As a result of the long genesis of the album it does sound somewhat fragmented in places, but the overall effect is soothing, almost pastoral ambience created by extensive usage of reverb and echo coupled with Gregorian chanting. The Pleasures Of Electricity
The Pleasures of Electricity is an album by John Foxx and Louis Gordon, released in 2001. It was the duo's second studio album, and Foxx's third after his return to the music scene in 1997. The album continues along the lines of modern electronics flavoured with early-80s touches that was set out by the duo's 1997 album '' Shifting City''. However, ''The Pleasures of Electricity'' is more polished and minimalist than any of Foxx's previous albums (solo or in a group), to the extent that the album sounds almost sterile in places. The lyrics recall themes similar to those in Foxx's classic album ''Metamatic'', dealing with traveling and urban life, including almost bizarre lyrics comparing driving in a car to mathematics in "Automobile" (all this delivered in Foxx's most deadpan voice). In Mysterious Ways
''In Mysterious Ways'' is a 1985 album by John Foxx, the follow-up to his album ''The Golden Section'', released two years previously. It features some of the highly romantic style similar to 1981's ''The Garden'' album. Largely missing from this recording are many of the styles Foxx was known for (such as glam inspired art rock, punk and minimal synthpop) in favor of a more soulful, contemporary pop sound. The lyrics are of discovery and rediscovery and there is much vibrato-laden organ-playing on this record. There are acoustic guitars, mid-1980s home studio-sounding rhythm machines, live drums and glimpses of ''Cathedral Oceans'' -style ambient music in places—particularly in the "Enter the Angel" reprise. Metamatic
''Metamatic'' is the debut solo album by John Foxx, released in 1980. It was his first solo project following his split with Ultravox the previous year. A departure from the mix of synthesizers and conventional rock instrumentation on that band's work, ''Metamatic'' was purely electronic in sound. The name 'Metamatic' comes from a painting machine by kinetic artist Jean Tinguely, first exhibited at the Paris Biennial in 1959. The album peaked at #18 on the UK Albums Chart. Production and style ''Metamatic'' was recorded at Pathway Studios, a small eight-track studio in Islington, and was engineered by Gareth Jones. Foxx's electronic equipment included an ARP Odyssey, an Elka 'String Machine' and a Roland CR-78 drum machine. Several of the synth parts were played by John Wesley-Barker.
