Shiawassee County ( ) is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 United States census, the population was 68,094. The county seat is Corunna, and the largest city in the county is Owosso. In 2010, the center of population of Michigan was located in Shiawassee County, in Bennington Township. Shiawassee County is included in the Lansing-East Lansing, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. History In 1822, the Michigan Territorial legislature defined a new county, Shiawassee (named for the Shiawassee River), taken from portions of existing Oakland and St. Clair counties. However, for purposes of representation, revenue, and judicial matters, the area was temporarily assigned to adjoining county governments. In early 1837, the Michigan Territory was admitted into the Union as the State of Michigan, and that same year the new Michigan State government authorized the organization of a county government in Shiawassee. Bennington Township is the center of population of the state of Michigan. The county was created by September 10, 1822, and was fully organized on February 9, 1835. The etymology of the county's name is uncertain. The ''Blue Water'' (previously the ''Blue Water Limited'') is a higher-speed passenger train service operated by Amtrak as part of its ''Michigan Services''. The route runs from Chicago, Illinois, to Port Huron in Michigan's Blue Water Area, for which the train is named. Major stops are in Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, East Lansing, and Flint. Nicknamed "Railroad City, USA", it is best known for its large train station which was a major hub for the Grand Trunk Western and Ann Arbor railroads during most of the 20th century, and is currently served by Amtrak. Durand Union Station is a historic train station in Durand, Michigan. The station, which now serves Amtrak ''Blue Water'' trains, was originally a busy Grand Trunk Western Railroad and Ann Arbor Railroad hub, as well as a local office for Grand Trunk Western, from its construction in 1903 until 1974. It is currently owned by the city of Durand and leased by Durand Union Station, Inc. a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation, restoration, and maintenance of the building and its surrounding property. Oakley, Michigan
Oakley is a village in Saginaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 290 at the 2010 census. The village is within Brady Township, although about half of the village would lie within Chesaning Township on the east, if the boundary line had not been adjusted. History Originally the area was called Mickleville. Philip Mickle, who owned a tavern there in 1842, became the first postmaster of Mickleville on March 12, 1856.
