Sherlock Holmes (1931 Film Series)
Sherlock Holmes is a film series running from 1931 to 1937. Arthur Wontner portrayed Sherlock Holmes in five films. Production Having been told he resembled Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Doyle's creation for years, Wontner was finally cast in the role for ''The Sleeping Cardinal'' in 1931. Wontner was noticed after portraying Sexton Blake at the Prince Edward Theater in 1930. Wontner was fifty-six when he began portraying Holmes and was forced to wear a toupée in the first three films to hide his bald spot. Holmes in the novels had retired at age fifty and as such, Wontner was technically too old for the part. Produced by Twickenham Studios, ''The Sleeping Cardinal'' was loosely based on "The Adventure of the Empty House" with the noticeable change that in the film version, Ronald Adair is a card cheat. ''Silver Blaze'' is a 1937 British black-and-white crime mystery film, based loosely on Arthur Conan Doyle's 1892 short story " The Adventure of Silver Blaze". Lyn Harding
David Llewellyn Harding (12 October 1867 – 26 December 1952), known professionally as Lyn Harding, was a Welsh actor who spent 40 years on the stage before entering British made silent films, talkies and radio. He had an imposing and menacing stage presence and came to be cast as the villain in many films, notably Professor Moriarty in dramatisations of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Ian Hunter (13 June 1900 – 22 September 1975) was a Cape Colony-born British actor of stage, film and television. Acting career On his return from military service Hunter studied under Elsie Fogerty at the Central School of Speech and Drama, then based in the Royal Albert Hall, London. Within two years he made his stage debut. He decided to work in British silent films taking a part in '' Not for Sale'' (1924) directed by W.P. Kellino for Stoll Pictures.
