Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center
The Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center at the University of Virginia opened in 1997 right next to Memorial Gymnasium. The 13-court facility showcases Virginia's men's and women's tennis teams. Configuration The complex has spectator areas built into the adjacent hillsides. Plans for the complex also include a tennis pavilion that will house instructional and meeting areas, tournament administration headquarters, and equipment storage space. Namesake The tennis center is named after Sheridan Snyder, a 1958 University of Virginia graduate who founded the National Junior Tennis League. Snyder is also a board member of Friends of Virginia Tennis. Sheridan Snyder
Sheridan Gray Snyder OBE (born October 20, 1936) is an entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and philanthropist in the biotechnology industry. He is the founder and CEO of Biocatalyst, but also a "serial entrepreneur", a founder of Genzyme and many other companies. Snyder, who was the University of Virginia's best tennis player when he was studying for his BA in French and Romance Languages there in the 1960s, made "major contributions to the popularisation of tennis in the USA." He co-founded the National Junior Tennis League that reaches 250,000 inner-city young people and constructed a new tennis center at the University of Virginia. The Virginia Cavaliers, also known as ''Wahoos'' or ''Hoos'', are the athletic teams representing the University of Virginia, located in Charlottesville. Memorial Gymnasium (Virginia)
Memorial Gymnasium is a 2,500-seat multi-purpose arena in Charlottesville, Virginia. It opened in 1924. It replaced Fayerweather Gymnasium as home to the University of Virginia Cavaliers basketball team until University Hall opened in 1965. History Established originally as a memorial to the University's World War I casualties, the facility continues to play a role in the athletic, recreational and physical education-kinesiology programs at the school. Nancy Astor
Nancy Witcher Langhorne Astor, Viscountess Astor, (19 May 1879 – 2 May 1964) was an American-born British politician who was the first woman seated as a Member of Parliament (MP), serving from 1919 to 1945. Astor's first husband was American Robert Gould Shaw II; the couple separated after four years and divorced in 1903. She moved to England and married Waldorf Astor.
