Sher Singh (4 December 1807 – 15 September 1843) was the fourth Maharaja of the Sikh Empire. He was elder of the twins of Ranjit Singh, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, founder of the Sikh Empire and Mehtab Kaur, Maharani Mehtab Kaur. His reign began on 18 January 1840 following his assault on Lahore which ended the brief regency of Chand Kaur, Maharani Chand Kaur.Syad Muhammad Latif, Lahore: Its History, Architectural Remains and Antiquities: With an Account of Its Modern Institutions, Inhabitants, Their Trade, Customs, Printed at the New Imperial Press, 1892 He was assassinated on 15 September 1843 by Ajit Singh Sandhawalia, a relative. His short-reign only lasted for two-years. An experienced military-man, Sher Singh had the backing of the Sikh Army. Sarkar (surname)
Sarkar or (Sorkar) is a surname among the people of the Indian subcontinent. It was an honorific title given to landlords/zamindars of East India, irrespective of their religious affiliation, under the Mughal Empire and even in Sher Shah Suri, Sher Shah's reign, as part of the erstwhile Persians, Persian nobility. At present there are Sarkar families in different parts of West Bengal, India as well as in Bangladesh. The surname is mainly used by Bengalis.
