Shepherdswell
Shepherdswell (also Sibertswold or Sibert's Wold) is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Shepherdswell with Coldred, in the Dover district of Kent, England. In 2011 it had a population of 1630. Culture and community Village social life centres on the local Grade I listed church 'Church of St Andrew', and the village hall which is hosts events including charity jumble sales and a pre-school playgroup. The village pub is the Grade II listed Bell by the village green, near to the church. Additionally the village has a Co-op mini-supermarket and a family-run farm shop (Frys’ Farm Shop). Shepherdswell is significant for the East Kent Railway, whose terminus is sited there. This was originally one of Colonel Stephens's lines and ran to Wingham. The section as far as Eythorne is now run by a preservation society. It has a mainline railway station named Shepherds Well with direct trains to Dover and London via Faversham. Shepherdswell With Coldred
Shepherdswell with Coldred is a civil parish in the Dover District of Kent, England. The parish contains the villages of Shepherdswell and Coldred, apart, and the hamlet of Coxhill just south-west of Shepherdswell. Shepherdswell with Coldred is approximately east from the county town of Maidstone. The south of the parish is approximately north-west from the channel port of Dover, and the north, south-east from Canterbury. A section of the major A2 London to Dover road runs through the parish at the south-west. Apart from this road, all others within the parish are minor and unnumbered. Shepherds Well Railway Station
Shepherds Well railway station is on the Dover branch of the Chatham Main Line in England, and serves the village of Shepherdswell, Kent. It is down the line from and is situated between and . The station and all trains that serve the station are operated by Southeastern. It appears in the timetable and online enquiry systems as "Shepherds Well" but the platform signs read "Shepherdswell". It is adjacent to the terminus of the East Kent heritage line, which is spelt as one word: Shepherdswell. The booking office in the station building on the country-bound platform is open only for very limited hours on Mondays to Fridays mornings but a Permit To Travel ticket machine (also on the country-bound platform) caters for out-of-hours ticketing. East Kent Railway (heritage)
The East Kent Railway (EKR) is a heritage railway in Kent, England. It is located at Shepherdswell station on the London and Chatham to Dover mainline. The line was constructed between 1911 and 1917 to serve the Kent Coalfields. See East Kent Light Railway for details of the original lines. The Kent Collieries were mostly a failure with only Tilmanstone on the line producing any viable commercial coal and commercial traffic over the line. The line is operated by heritage diesel locomotives. It is home to a collection of heritage diesel locomotives including a British Rail Class 08, DEMU and electric multiple units including an in service British Rail Class 404 built in the 1930s and a more modern British Rail Class 365, which is to be used as a restaurant and a major events venue. Coldred
Coldred is a settlement and former civil parish, now in the parish of Shepherdswell with Coldred, in the Dover district of Kent, England. The main part of the village is Coldred Street which lies to the south-west. In 1961 the parish had a population of 153. Name There are various competing views of the origin of the name. Based on the Domesday Book entry, the ''Oxford Dictionary of Place Names'' gives "Clearing where coal is found, or where charcoal is made. OE col + *ryde". This is also quoted by the village website which lists the variant names of "Coeldred", "Coelret" and "Colret". Hastead thought that the name was from its "cold and bleak situation" though he mentioned that it might be named after Ceolred of Mercia who may have visited the place in 715. North Downs Way
The North Downs Way National Trail is a long-distance path in South East England, opened in 1978. It runs from Farnham in Surrey to Dover in Kent, past Guildford, Dorking, Merstham, Otford and Rochester, through the Surrey Hills National Landscape and the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Miner's Way Trail
The Miner's Way Trail is a long-distance circular footpath in England, starting at Sholden, Kent. Linking up the coalfield parishes of East Kent. Including; the parishes of Deal, Kent, Deal, Ash, Dover, Ash, Aylesham, Chillenden, Eastry, Eythorne, Elvington, Kent, Elvington, Goodnestone, Dover, Goodnestone, Nonington, Northbourne, Kent, Northbourne, Coldred, Staple, Kent, Staple, Tilmanstone and Wingham, Kent, Wingham.
