Shenandoah County (formerly Dunmore County) is a county (United States), county located in the Commonwealth (U.S. state), Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 United States census, the population was 44,186. Its county seat is Woodstock, Virginia, Woodstock. It is part of the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia. History George Washington named the river, valley and county Shenandoah in honor of John Skenandoa, a Christian Oneida people, Oneida chief from New York who helped gain the support of Oneida and Tuscarora warriors to aid the Americans during the American Revolutionary War. This included helping the Americans survive at Valley Forge. Sir William Gooch, 1st Baronet, Colonial Governor Gooch formally purchased the entire Shenandoah Valley from the Iroquois Confederacy, Six Nations of the Iroquois by the Treaty of Lancaster in 1744. Massanutten Mountain
Massanutten Mountain is a synclinal ridge in the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians, located in the U.S. state of Virginia. The original Native American name for the ridge is unknown. Geography The mountain bisects the Shenandoah Valley just east of Strasburg in Shenandoah County in the north, to its highest peak east of Harrisonburg in Rockingham County in the south. The mountain is divided into northern and southern sections, divided by the New Market Gap. The northern section consists of 3 roughly parallel ridges, forming 2 valleys. Battle Of New Market
The Battle of New Market was fought on May 15, 1864, in Virginia during the Valley Campaigns of 1864 in the American Civil War. A makeshift Confederate army of 4,100 men defeated the larger Army of the Shenandoah under Major General Franz Sigel, delaying the capture of Staunton by several weeks. The battle is primarily remembered today for being the only time in American history a school's student body was used as an organized combat unit. During the battle Confederate general John C.
