Shelby Park (Eagle Pass)
Shelby Park is located on of parkland on the banks of the Rio Grande River in downtown Eagle Pass, Texas, U.S. The park is owned and maintained by the City of Eagle Pass. It was created using Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds after the area was cleared of homes and businesses following major flooding in 1998 and named for Confederate General Joseph O. Shelby, who fled to Mexico through Eagle Pass in 1865. Eagle Pass is a city in and the county seat of Maverick County in the U.S. state of Texas. Its population was 28,130 as of the 2020 census. The New Virginia Colony was a colonization plan in central Mexico, to resettle ex- Confederates after the American Civil War. The largest settlement was Carlota, approximately midway between Mexico City and Veracruz, although other settlements were planned near Tampico, Monterrey, Cuernavaca, and Chihuahua. Standoff At Eagle Pass
On January 11, 2024, the Texas National Guard took control of Shelby Park, a area of parkland in the town of Eagle Pass, along the Rio Grande river, which separates the United States from Mexico, after Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed an emergency declaration to close the park. In his declaration, Abbott cited the Mexico–United States border crisis and the need to secure the border. Operation Lone Star
Operation Lone Star is a joint mission between the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Military Department along the southern border between Texas and Mexico. Launched in March 2021, the stated purpose according to Texas Governor Greg Abbott is to counter illegal immigration and the illegal drug trade.
