Sheikh Najmul Haque
Sheikh Najmul Haque (born 10 September 1951) was an Indian politician and farmer. He served as a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly for nearly thirty years. Early life and family Haque was born on 10 September 1951 to a Bengalis, Bengali family of Muslim Sheikhs of Bengal, Sheikhs in the village of Kharagpur II, Pelagerya in Midnapore district, Bengal Presidency. He is the son of Sheikh Shamsul Haque, and was the son-in-law of Mirza Jamaluddin Chishti. Haque studied at the Madpur Higher Secondary School and Midnapore College. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Calcutta in 1973. Career Haque was a farmer. He contested in the 1987 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election where he ran as an Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate for Kharagpur Assembly constituency, Kharagpur Rural Assembly constituency. West Bengal Legislative Assembly
The West Bengal Legislative Assembly (ISO 15919, ISO: ''Paścimabaṅga Vidhānasabhā'') is the unicameral legislature of the Indian state of West Bengal, located in eastern India. It consists of 294 members directly elected from single-seat constituencies through the first-past-the-post voting, FPTP voting system. The Assembly meets at Vidhan Sabha Bhavan in Kolkata, the capital of the state. The presiding officer of the Assembly is the Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Speaker, currently Biman Banerjee. Members of the Assembly are directly elected by the people of West Bengal through elections held every five years, unless the Assembly is dissolved earlier. The current Assembly was elected in April–May 2021, and the next election is scheduled for 2026. Legislative Assembly elections were held in Indian state of West Bengal in 2001 to elect 294 members of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Seat Allotment Results Left Front led by Communist Party of India (Marxist) won 196 seats, a majority. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was reelected as Chief Minister. Pankaj Kumar Banerjee of All India Trinamool Congress, took charge as Leader of the Opposition. For the first time since 1971, no single party won a majority. This was also the first time since its landslide victory in 1977, that the ruling CPI(M) failed to win a majority on its own.
