Sheikh Muhammad Abdolrahman
Ali ibn Shaykh Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman was a prominent Persian physician who is thought to have lived in the 17th century. Little is known of this author. What is certain is that he composed a large Persian medical encyclopedia, in didactic verse, titled ''Jawahir al-maqal'' ("The Gems of Discourse") which is preserved in only two copies: one at The National Library of Medicine, and one in Oxford University. It is thought that he was a rather recent figure, probably from the seventeenth century. But he must certainly have lived before 1791, when an owner's note was appended to the undated NLM manuscript. The United States National Library of Medicine (NLM), operated by the United States federal government, is the world's largest medical library. Oxford University
The University of Oxford is a collegiate research university in Oxford, England. There is evidence of teaching as early as 1096, making it the oldest university in the English-speaking world and the second-oldest continuously operating university globally. Eduard Sachau
Carl Eduard Sachau (20 July 1845 – 17 September 1930) was a German orientalist. He taught Josef Horovitz and Eugen Mittwoch. Biography He studied oriental languages at the Universities of Kiel and Leipzig, obtaining his PhD at Halle in 1867. Sachau became a professor extraordinary of Semitic philology (1869) and a full professor (1872) at the University of Vienna, and in 1876, a professor at the University of Berlin, where he was appointed director of the new Seminar of Oriental languages (1887). Sachau travelled to the Near East on several occasions (see his book ''Reise in Syrien und Mesopotamien'', published 1883) and became known for his work on Syriac and other Aramaic dialects. He was an expert on polymath Al-Biruni and wrote a translation of ''Kitab ta'rikh al-Hind'', Al-Biruni's encyclopedic work on India. Sachau also wrote papers on Ibadi Islam. Medical Encyclopedia Of Islam And Iran
The ''Medical Encyclopedia of Islam and Iran'' is a series of reference books being prepared in the Iran's Academy of Medical Sciences. The objective of this project is to publish a 5-volume collection; each one consisting of 1000 pages and 500 articles. Its content will include a history of medicine in Iran and other Islamic countries. So far, a limited number of books and references have been published in Iran and this matter has been the motive of the Academy of Medical Sciences to collect references and compiling the encyclopedia. The field of activity and the subject of the articles are biography of famous Iranian and foreign physicians, pharmacologists, pharmacists and herbalists in past centuries, hospitals, medical schools and centers, drugs, herbs, medical instruments and terms in the history of medicine.
