Shawlands F.C.
Shawlands Football Club was a Scottish football team, based in Pollokshaws, now part of Glasgow (at the time a separate burgh). History The club was founded in 1884, with 53 members; it never grew above that figure, meaning the club was one of the smallest senior clubs in Glasgow. Its record as a senior club was undistinguished. It took part in the Scottish Cup twice, in 1884–85 and 1885–86. In the former year, it was drawn to play Granton, an older but slightly bigger club which also played at Norwood Park. Granton scored the only goal of the game. In its second entry, the club was drawn to visit 3rd Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers, one of the leading clubs in the city, and was outclassed, the Volunteers winning 9–1; the Shawlands goal was a late consolation from a long shot. Pollokshaws ( sco, Powkshaws) is an area on the South side of the city of Glasgow, Scotland. It is bordered by the residential neighbourhoods of Auldhouse to the east, Eastwood and Hillpark to the south and Shawlands to the north, with the Glasgow South Western Line railway and the open lands of Pollok Country Park to the west. The White Cart Water flows through the area. The housing stock consists of some sandstone tenement housing, modern brick tenement-style buildings, low-rise social housing and high rise/multi-storey tower blocks. Previously eight tower blocks stood in an area known as the Shawbridge Corridor; the last of these blocks was demolished in March 2016. Four other tower blocks remain, near Pollokshaws East railway station. According to the 2001 Census, Pollokshaws had a population of 4,295. The 1885–86 Scottish Cup was the 13th season of Scotland's most prestigious football knockout competition. Queen's Park won the competition for the eighth time after they beat defending champions Renton 3–1 in the final. Arbroath set a world record in the first round when they defeated Bon Accord 36–0 on 12 September 1885. The score remains a record in British senior football and globally for a match that was not fixed or thrown. Coincidentally, on the same day, Dundee Harp recorded an equally one-sided victory as they beat Aberdeen Rovers 35–0.
