Shaw Festival Production History
The Shaw Festival is a major Canadian theatre festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, the second largest repertory theatre company in North America. Founded in 1962, its original mandate was to stimulate interest in George Bernard Shaw and his period, and to advance the development of theatre arts in Canada. Shaw Festival
The Shaw Festival is a Charitable organization, Charitable theatre festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada. It is the second largest repertory theatre company in North America, second only to Canada's Stratford Festival. The Shaw Festival was founded in 1962. Originally, it only featured productions written by George Bernard Shaw, but changes were later implemented by Christopher Newton and Jackie Maxwell that widened the theatre's scope. As of 2019, the theatre company was considered to be one of the largest 20 employers in the Regional Municipality of Niagara, Niagara Region. History The Festival's roots can be traced to 1962 when Brian Doherty and Calvin Rand staged a summertime "Salute to Shaw" at the Niagara District Court House, Court House Theatre. ''The Millionairess'' is a 1960 British romantic comedy film directed by Anthony Asquith, and starring Sophia Loren and Peter Sellers. Plot By the terms of her late father's will, spoiled London heiress Epifania Ognissanti di Parerga, the richest woman in the world, cannot marry unless her prospective husband is able to turn £500 into £15,000 within a three-month period. Paxton Whitehead
Francis Edward Paxton Whitehead (17 October 1937 – 16 June 2023) was an English actor and theatre director. He was nominated for a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for his performance as Pellinore in the 1980 revival of '' Camelot''. Whitehead had many Broadway roles. He was also known for his film roles and for his many guest appearances on several U.S. television shows: he portrayed Bernard Thatch on ''The West Wing'', and in the 1990s often appeared in recurring and guest roles on major sitcoms, such as ''Frasier'', ''Caroline in the City'', '' Ellen'', ''3rd Rock from the Sun'', ''The Drew Carey Show'', '' Mad About You'', and ''Friends''. Suzanne Grossmann (December 21, 1937 – August 19, 2010) was a Swiss-American actress, playwright and television writer, born in Basel, Switzerland.Obituary ''Los Angeles Times'', August 25, 2010; page AA6. She later lived and studied in Brazil, Canada, and the USA. Having first obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree at McGill University, in Montreal, Quebec, Grossmann was among the first graduates of the National Theatre School of Canada in 1963. Georges Feydeau
Georges-Léon-Jules-Marie Feydeau (; 8 December 1862 – 5 June 1921) was a French playwright of the Belle Époque era, remembered for his farces, written between 1886 and 1914. Feydeau was born in Paris to middle-class parents and raised in an artistic and literary environment. From an early age he was fascinated by the theatre, and as a child he wrote plays and organised his schoolfellows into a drama group. In his teens he wrote comic monologues and moved on to writing longer plays. His first full-length comedy, ' (), was well received, but was followed by a string of comparative failures. ''The Importance of Being Oscar'' is a one man show devised by the ''soi-disant'' Irish people, Irish actor Micheál Mac Liammóir and based on the writings of Oscar Wilde. It intersperses excerpts from Wilde's plays and other writings with biographical highlights of his life. Mac Liammóir performed this show for the first time at the Gate Theatre, Dublin in 1960, took it to Broadway theatre, Broadway under the auspices of Michael Redgrave's production company with lighting design by Lee Watson, and toured with it all over the world. The show was issued on two LPs by Columbia Records, CBS Records, and televised in Ireland by RTÉ (for which producer Chloe Gibson won a Jacob's Award), airing first on Saint Patrick's Day 1964. ''Major Barbara'' is a three-act English play by George Bernard Shaw, written and premiered in 1905 and first published in 1907. The story concerns an idealistic young woman, Barbara Undershaft, who is engaged in helping the poor as a Major in the Salvation Army in London. For many years, Barbara and her siblings have been estranged from their father, Andrew Undershaft, who now reappears as a rich and successful munitions maker. The father gives money to the Salvation Army, which offends Barbara because she considers it "tainted" wealth.
